Thickness of various SAK parts
on: September 05, 2017, 11:04:29 AM
I thought that this thread would be handy for anyone to ask for the thickness of bits and pieces before they attempt a mod where success depends on thickness info.   :tu:

I'll start: How much thicker is a scissor tang than a fish scaler tang?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Someone posted some images showing the different tools from one SAK model to another, plus the difference in width between them. You can get all that info there.

I'll try to find that thread.

Turns out that it's not what I'm looking for.
I want to know tang thickness, that chart is layer thickness, including liners?  :-\

Yeah, guess so. Still, the liners are all the same width, right? Just do the meth?... huh... math?

They're not.  Pliers, philips/magnifer, lite/magnifier and cybertool use thicker liners.

Old main blade tang: 2.4mm. Spring unknown
New main blade tang: 2mm. Spring unknown.
Wood saw/metal file: 1.8mm. Springs: 1.7mm?

This question is relevant to my interests. And if anyone knows if it would be possible to swap the pruner blade and can opener between a Rancher and a Forester I would really like to know it.

Can anyone accurately measure the thickness of the small blade, or small blade spacer?  :pok:

Aren't the sheepsfoot and pruning blades as thick as the large blades?

The pivot hole size difference wont matter, the .5mm difference is negligible.

I know that the pruner blade will fit in place of the small blade on 91mm models. It fits in the can opener slot on 93mm models, and might work there on the 91mm models too.  No idea about the bottle opener slot
I've got a pruner knife here, the 100mm single blade type fromt he "hoticultural knives" line from Vic.

It seems bigger than the 93mm pruner blade...micrometer says 2.01mm tang thickness...

Old style 91mm main blade (without the spacer built into the outer liner) says 2.43mm, pen blade on same 91mm knife says 1.48mm

So it seems like I could put the 100mm knife pruning blade in place of the MAIN blade (This pruning blade is offset as if to allow for a small blade on the other end).
I'd need a .42mm spacer though.

Cap lifter layer reads as 2.0mm

So..perhaps the pruning blade from the dedicated 100mm Pruning Knife would work in the place of the cap lifter OR can opener, but would take up the entire layer...
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Can anyone accurately measure the thickness of the small blade, or small blade spacer?  :pok:

Not the most reliable measurements as I'm working with an assembled knife and an uncalibrated digital caliper, but:
Small blade tang = 1.39 - 1.43 mm depending where I measure it
Spacer = 0.98 - 1.02 mm

I'd assume 1.4 mm and 1.0 mm.

That seems consistent with the above quote from JamesJ.
Apparently the small blade spacer is closer to 0.9mm.

I was measuring the thickness of the spacer + liner and subtracting the liner thickness so that's quite possible. Can repeat them with stand alone parts later if you need me to.

I don't know, that's why I asked  ;). My guess is solely based on the following similarities:

  • The Rancher is basically a '61 Soldier with the can opener replaced with the pruning blade.
  • The Forester is really just a '08 Soldier with the Phillips replaced with a corkscrew.
  • The '08 Soldier uses the same pin sizes as the '61 Soldiers.
My hope is that the '08 Soldier uses the same can opener as the '61 Soldier and that the Rancher uses the same spring as the '61 Soldier (and both of these points would make sense from a production perspective )
