Made my first knife
on: October 26, 2008, 09:48:02 PM
Inspired by another guy who made a kirdashi out of a wrench, I decided to make a little knife out of a cheap wrench I have lying around. So here it is, full flat grind tanto point, edge is 2" long. Not that I like tanto point, but it's easier to grind. No clue what steel or hardness it is, just that it's a pain in the butt to grind, especially I had to keep it from overheating. Not sure what to do with the box end yet.

An old belt sander I just bought used, the type use 4x36" belt. The notches are done with dremel.

Haha, didn't think about the multitool aspect. I just wish I had the stuff to make a little kydex sheath for it.

A little improvement, ground away the nubs and enlarged the hole so it can be hung off pinky when temporarily not in use, and added some wrap to make the handle more substantial.

It looks really good...Some old rawhide from a toolbelt would keep the "tool" motif and be a good sheath material :tu:

Thanks! I don't have the skill nor the material to make sheath, so for now I think I'll just bend some hard plastic piece into shape for sheath. This is a really crappy knife anyway so maybe some day I'll order good steel to make a more refined version, and have it properly heat treated and sheathed.  :D

That has a really good cool aspect to it. when in the sheath the other end could of been used as a tool but guess it's too late for that. it also offers a low profile look if you need to carry a defensive weapon and wear a tool belt for a living, it would blend in nicely with the real tools, just know which one to whip out if it comes down to that.

I like version 2.0 with the paracord. Have you thought of a name yet?

It was made from a 1/2" wrench and as it were my little finger cannot fit through the hole comfortably, if I had made it from, say 3/4" wrench there would be no need to modify the box end in any way, and perhaps the whole thing would fit more comfortably in hand due to bigger size.

Never actually occured to me I should give it a name. I started working on it last friday and did intentionally put 13 notched on the back, so I'll call it Friday the 13th. :D

It was a spur of the moment thing, but I do like how it came out. If I had more tools than a 17 year old craftsman sander (no kidding, the model tag says 91) and a knockoff dremel, perhaps it could come out better.

If I had all the equiptment this is what I would do. 4mm thick S110V full flat grind.
