Classic BSA Knife - any good manufacturers today?
on: October 04, 2017, 11:52:50 AM
Hi folks,

currently I am looking into the world of the good old BSA knife - the classic knife blade, awl, screwdriver/bottleopener, canopener thingy. Like the Wenger SI.
Beeing european, I never was at the scouts, but I like the compact, classic design and feeling.
Ive read a lot on the internet, about the old brands - Schrade, Ulster, Camillus and so on. Most of them either dont exist anymore or moved production away from the US with all the quality drops tied to that.

You can find some nice knifes in the bay, already do this.

So my question is, are there any brands that still do good quality BSA-Knifes? I know Victorinox, I know Wenger, but I am looking for some old Bone-handled with bolsters, Bail...

Hope you guys can help me.

Regards
Michael

Hiennie Haynes do a Rough Rider Camp knife with jigged bone scales which doesn't cost very much. Check them out on this Youtube video (he doesn't even iopen the box until 3.48)

Böker makes one too, marketing it as “Böker Camp Knife”; it's pretty expensive, though (it is made in their German factory). Case is another reliable brand which still hasn't been bought out, their “Scout Pocket Knife” is a little cheaper. Both knives have bail and a selection of handles.

Hubertus also make some lovely, classic knives, but these have no bail. (Hubertus Serie "73")

Unless you plan to buy used, there isn't any, really that are official BSA knives  that are decent. The whole line of official BSA knives is made in China and of poor quality. The  Remington BSA knives (replica of the old one from the '20s and '30s), which are made by Bear and Son are OK, and rather affordable (like $35), but they're small, and Bear's quality is irregular.  They do have bone handles, though. Case makes a line of knives (all non-official) that are BSA licensed, mostly with your requirement of bone handles,  and there is a Scout knife in that line (but it's almost $100).  Non official, you've got several.  The aforementioned Rough Rider is under $20.

I don't know about buying used, but there plenty both BSA and non in the Scout/Camper/Utility pattern that are excellent. I have a bone handled "Made in USA" marked Utility (made in Camillus) with beautiful Rogers bone that cost me less than $10.  May of the BSA knives cost $20, and are excellent, all US made (Ulster, Imperial, Camillus, just to name a few).
