Having tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to make a bail for the hollow rivetted members of my SAK team, and tired of swapping the one single official bail I own, I decided to contact Victorinox customer services to enquire how to go about getting some more. The plan was to discover an untapped seam of free bails and then let you all in on the secret.

I received an answer today, via the local Vic dealer. From the email:


Good afternoon Magentus,
 
Please see the below response from Switzerland, :-
 
 
Generally we don’t send these spare parts to end-user.
 
Some of the soldier knives until 1963 had this bail. Private people could buy it with the bail but the military used the knife without it. So we choose the process as follow, if the client wants a new bail:
 
-We need pictures of the knife with the imprinting of the blade
-The customer needs to confirm that he had a bail before
 
If that is ok, we will send the bail for free directly to the customer.
 
 
Please advise me of your address details, I believe Switzerland will only send one out.

Interesting they say that some knives had a bail before 1963. My first SI, a '94, came with a bail  :facepalm:

Thoughts? Anyone else try this before? I have answered and will post if and when I receive my free bail.

Does anyone know another source for these? I don't expect them to be free, but I would like a couple more as they're really useful.

Just think of all those bails folks removed and discarded. Now we can’t find them for anything!

I, too, love the bail. However, I have, on more than one occasion sadly, closed the blade on my bail. Thus nicking my blade.

Well, I’ll have to find something different to try to make a bail from. The clothes hanger I have is too big in diameter.

Anyone know off hand the diameter of the factory bail wire?  I have mine here but no way to measure it. Can’t find my calipers right now.

Ok, found a smaller diameter hanger. Mind you, this is my first ever attempt. Only tools I used were my Leatherman Crunch and Rebar.  It can be done. Someone with more patience and better tools can surely do better. Also, I am wondering if either stainless or aluminum welding rod would work better?  I used to be a TIG welder and we used welding rod for everything!  Haha.  Wish I was still a welder now and had access to all the different welding rods!!
