Favourite multitool, and why?
on: December 20, 2017, 01:48:39 AM
Interested to know what everyone's favourite multitool is (this includes any definition of multitool), and what is it that makes it your favourite (which can be absolutely anything, from the way it looks, the way it smells, the tools it has, the sentimentality behind it - i.e. what it means for you, etc.). Photos welcome.

I'll start - I can't remember how long now, but I've had a Vic Spirit, I just haven't come across anything else which has such amazing fit and finish, such simplicity but tool density (including all outside opening tools), and which works so flawlessly. I like the quirky way it looks as well (like a 'butterfly') in its closed position - which also makes it more ergonomic when in plier mode.

For me it is the Vic Champ. Been using them since the mid 70's and as a pocket tool it is perfect for me. I was in business for myself for many years and it performed perfectly as a get it fixed and go tool. If I needed more than it could do it was time to drag out a real tool box.
To paraphrase Barbara Mandrel I was carrin' a SAK when SAK wasn't cool.

Currently? It's my EDC, a Super Tinker with Stay Glow scales.

#1 thing I need to be good on an MT I carry is the scissors. The SAK scissors are very good. Blade is great, there pretty much isn't a tool on it I haven't used. I have never needed a corkscrew out in the wilds of 'real life', and HAVE used the phillips.

Did I mention it has stay glow scales. It GLOWS IN THE DARK! It's like the cool toy in the cereal box as a kid, only it REALLY glows, and for a long time. And even in broad daylight, that thing is super easy to spot.

Glows in the dark. Just sayin'. :D

Rebar.

Has all the tools I need. The only things I don't need are the lanyard ring and I've yet to use the blades in five years, but I also carry at least one locking single blade folder or a small fixed blade every day. The 4" size is the best compromise of usability and compactness. Its light enough that in a proper made sheath it is basically weightless. As much as I'd like to execute DutchTooler's VX mod on it, you can't lose the drivers on a stock Rebar without breaking it rather completely.

Favorite MT? Way too subjective. IMHO of course.
Try owning over a hundred of them(Mts from many many brands). This makes it nearly impossible to have a favorite.
The spirit(and bigger swisstool) is cool, but the softer steel, two hand only usage, and fingernail requirement keep them from my top five favorites. They do reside in the top ten though. :tu:
I carried a Gerber multi-plier(pinchy) over ten years. Swore by it, learned to use it and not get pinched. Thought it was perfect. Then started collecting all brands. Life is much more complicated now.
Brand loyalty makes life simple, but you will miss out on some really cool MTs along the way. Gerber, Leatherman, SOG, Victorinox, Bear Jaws, and many others have some fine tools I think everyone should try before solidifying a favorite.

I think it's the Vic Spartan. I could list all the rational reasons, but really, it all boils down to that it just feels right for me. It's a knife. With rounded scales so it doesn't ruin pockets. It's slim, so it's easy to bring along. And enough tools that it's wide enough to be comfortable to hold. And it's got an awl. And tweezers. And a small blade. And I can get at beer with it. And so on. If I need more I add on tools or carry a bigger SAK in addition or instead of, but most days, it's me and a Spartan.

Hands down, Leatherman Surge, full stop.

It is built like a M4 Sherman. OH blades, saws/file and scissors. Love the bit exchanger. They maybe a little on the heavy side but it uses and power it packs definitely outweighs the extra ounces.

Any of the Supertool variants for me because they are a heavier duty version of the original PST   :tu:

If I would need pliers on a regular basis, I would carry Knipex pliers and if I needed to fasten/loosen many screws, I would carry a bit-kit in appropriate size to my tasks. Since I don't need either often, I carry the Spirit. It offers the most function for its size. But quite honestly, my absolute favorite is the:
Soldier '61
Its, small and capable.

I'm torn between my two VX mods of LM tools, ST300 and Rebar. The latter for its pocketability, the former for being built like a tank. Both needed modding though to add the requisite level of versatility. As non-OHO, I can carry them around without (many) restrictions here - were it not for that I might have voted for stock or only lightly modded Wave and Surge respectively.
Cheers!

I can only go off the tools I've had, and I'm going to vote for my favorite two to carry, not my most useful.

Camo Fuse because I love the look and feel of it, I know people weren't keen on the zytel but I am.

And my old Schrade Tough Tool. Awesome pliers and I love carrying it in the huge matching box sheath I was gifted from a member here.

The modded Rebar from Lynn is hands down my hardest working tool. If I plan on needing to use my MT hard that's where I reach 10/10.
