2017 memories - Good, Bad and Ugly
on: December 31, 2017, 07:05:40 PM
Hi folks!
At the entrance of the New Year I always like to think back about all the stuff I got, bought or received in the past 12 months and decide which were the best, the most unexpected, the biggest surprise...
May I ask you then,
what were the best, coolest that you got your hands on last year? Be it electronics, knives, tools, SAKs, gear, or anything else that you bought or were gifted, or even found laying around somewhere and added to your possessions.

Thanks for your collaboration!  :salute:

I'll start,

- Nix's gift knife, the ZT0561, was my first step into high end knives and quality flippers. It surpassed my expectations and earned a privileged spot in my pants as main folding knife for its incredible machining tolerances, its sexy looks and tailor made ergonomics. I love it!

- Rebar, I thought it would be a flimsy weak tool (like a Skele/Juice) coming from the ST300, but it was surprisingly sturdy, versatile and carry friendly (boy, compare that little thing to the ST brick) while retaining the back to basics Leatherman scheme and principles. And MT.org engraved!!!
:multi:

- Enter the Knipex Cobra, a tough and sturdy dedicated tool that puts to shame any MT in gripping power, quick use and hard work. The quality was definitely a step up from the low priced similar tools I used previously, and I bought two more sizes after rusting and chipping mine a bit this year   :ahhh

- My father brought me an Higonokami from his trip to Japan, and then I understood why it's an all time classic in its country. Basically a thinner, one handed openable opinel with beautiful brass handle and classy carbon steel that sharpens in your calluses if needed be - awesome inexpensive knife

- The 5.11 Tactical Pants have been my go-to pants half this year. I read lots and heard many good things but, boy, these are the EDCer's clothes to end them all. Dedicated pocket, stronger seams in key spots, "camo" or good old black/green/khaki colour and quality built to fit your nerd-ism

- The light that I long awaited, evolution to the TUBE, the Nitecore TIP gave me all I wanted and took aways what drew me away from the older model. It's light, bright, charges like my mobile phone, friendly coloured and easy to use. I can't leave it back each and every day, it's a keeper   :tu:

- I thought it'd be another keychain gimmick at best, but the SOG MacV tool replaced all my other keychain OPTs and gizmos, leaving it paired with the Minichamp alone. It's a prybar, a driver, a scraper...you name it, cheap but so versatile it has found a permanent place among my stuff

- And finally Kampfer's last week gift, the Hold Out III, something I could never get my hands on and even more drooled over after losing my Hold Out II this August. It's the essence of Cold Steel put in a tiny winey knife, that cuts like a chainsaw and makes you  :o at its size/power ratio

I want to thank Nix and Kampf especially because of their gifts, and the inexplicable generosity they showed. This forum is ful of worthy and good people and it's truly the best place to go and forget about the boring and bad stuff whenever you can, and hopefully collaborate for a better, funnier and stronger community in which to enjoy and have good times.
Thanks all, and those two gentlemen,  :hatsoff:  and have a really really good and healthy 2018!

I didn´t get much in 2017. Of course, a few weeks ago I purchased a Robert Lessard SAK, but other than that I just had to make do with the tools already in my possession. My 2017 favorites definitely are the large Opinel tools (pruning shears, #12 knife, #12 saw). They were used on a daily basis at work, and I think they are among my best purchases ever. Proper size and a joy to use in the garden and elsewhere outdoors.

Yes, and guess what: now the holidays are over (I´ll start working again tomorrow) they´ll be back in business. It´s tree planting season here. The trees  we plant are about 5 meters (17 feet), a tad too large to be called saplings, and they need some pruning/thinning out before we put them in the ground. The knife comes in handy when cutting the plastic watering collar to size.

Very interesting topic. One I definitely shouldn't reply in while in this state
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

5 surgeries in 2017, 5 months in plaster, most of the year not being able to walk properly or at all. Yeah, bring on 2018.
