Fuzzbucket: Knowing when to Stop!
on: January 20, 2018, 06:12:35 PM
As many of you are know doubt aware, I sometimes lack the ability to just leave things alone.

A few weeks ago, I rather predictably broke the tip off the sabre blade on my BO PST.

Never mind Fuzzy I said to myself while munching on McVities Hob Nob, this presents an opportunity, this means I can re-profile the blade shape to something I like without feeling like a complete knob vandal.

So I got to it, chucked a belt sander on my jig and got to work carefully reshaping the blade in short smooth runs etc... and you know what? I did a bloody good job... well I thought so anyway and I really value my opinion.

Then I used some acid to blend in the amended parts of exposed steel with the original black oxide coating - it was starting to look great, fantastic even - it had that perfect beat-up black oxide quality that is truly gorgeous to us multitoolistas. I should definitely stop now... I had achieved Fuzzbucket perfection!!!

But then... from out of bloody nowhere some moronic entity with possible learning disabilities took over my being... and decided to do a bit more... then a bit more... then a bit more...

...until I ended up with this...

Now every time I look at it, I feel ashamed, dirty and soiled  - it reminds me of failure and my failings as a Fuzzbucket...

Anyway, never mind, nows the perfect opportunity to do some experimentation and finally see if there's a way to effectively blacken a Leatherman blade without mucking up the temper...

More on this to follow... (maybe)...

So, I suppose my question to you lot is, what all smurf-ups have you done and did you ever manage to remedy them?

That's a wicked looking profile Fuzzy (mind if I call you Fuzzy?), and I like it!  :like:

I used a cold bluing kit (actually a blackening solution (google is your friend)) on an old rifle barrel one time with some success, it didn't turn out as black as I wanted, even after multiple applications, but it did tone down the shiny steel left behind by the sanding and polishing. I think other methods require heat, so not sure about the tempering. Sorry no pics, the rifle is long gone.  :salute:

Oh, and the screw up I made was to leave the rifle in a damp place.

When I read the title I thought you were referring to the whole 'pooper' thing.

Heck but that's a nice profile you put on that blade though.

Thanks Twiliter, you may indeed call me Fuzzy!

Yes, I've got a bottle of Super Blu somewhere and I'm going to give that a go when Mrs Fuzzbucket's out of the house as it can sometimes stink something awful! I'm not holding out much hope though, as I've heard it doesn't work very well, if at all, with Leathermans steel.

I sort of was...but anyway I was only partially responsible for that... most of all, I think Pabs was most to blame.... That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I suppose there's always LM warranty if it's annoying enough, but I like it, patina is cool.  :tu:

Looks good, Fuzzy.

I'd hit it with some cold blue and call it a job well done.

Nice forced patina Fuzzy   :D

Not sure how the spray graphite will hold up on a blade

Thank you chaps for your kind words of encouragement!

I agree It is not a bad forced patina, but unfortunately that wasn't really what I was trying to achieve... well actually I did achieve it momentarily, but got rather carried away and erased the good work!

Thanks Steve for the graphite info... I had a feeling you might make the connection.
I just want to experiment on another blade (for now) and see what happens when you apply it on top of an acid wash and then work it out a bit... I don't know - it'll be a fun experiment!

I try to marry my smurf-ups with matching cover-ups. I think a bad memory would be very useful for that as I'm not good at keeping secrets. Sadly I also think I have a good memory. I'm not sure whether that is actually true, or if I just think so because I have forgot what I don't remember? Anyway, moving on...

Many years ago a friend worked at this facility where they had some issues with wild animals entering places they weren't supposed to. It was kind of critical, so they got some high voltage electric cow fence wire to keep the critters away. Weirdly enough the facility planners hadn't incorporated mounting plans for high voltage wire, so the only place they could fit them were just below some handrails. If you didn't know about them you'd be in for a proper shock even with gloves on.

Around this time there was a allied military exercise going on nearby. During that they were informed that there would come a busload of people who were to be given a tour of the facility. That was not unusual, and the foreman started taking them around on the official show and tell.

From a distance my friend could see some of the visitors stray off from the rest of the herd. Worse yet they headed straight towards the electric handrails area! He quickly ran towards the switch, and just about managed to turn the switch before they got there. Major mishaps avoided, and he felt quite happy about himself and his swift reaction! Hero of the day!

A second later there were three upset middle aged men swearing and jumping around down there. It turned out my friend had actually turned the switch on instead of off... After the tour the foreman was very confused because he thought for sure he had remembered to turn it off just in case... To this day my friend has never confessed to anything.

Edit: That busload might have consisted of Senators from some country in North America.

Edit2: If you fry any of those people today you might get a free stay at a remore island.

Edit3: I do have friends you know.

Edit4: I've forgotten this storys relation to the original thread. There might be none.  :drink:

First off, I like the shape.

So you went to far. OK. So maybe the answer is to go a little further and tell a story with it. Splatter a little more of that finish remover on it, and wipe it off. And if anyone asks, you had this and your boots against a xenomorph facehugger. Acid for blood, nasty little critter, but you got it before you got a face full of alien wingwang and an egg in the chest.

Excellent story!

I have sort of a similar one...

Many years ago, I worked at university research department (not unlike the IT Crowd), and for some utterly bizarre reason we had a very high profile Portuguese delegation make a visit... which was strange as we never normally had visitors let alone VIP Diplomats from another country.
Anyway, it was nothing to do with me really, they weren't going to talk to me, I just had to be on best behaviour and not arse about etc...

So they were all in the room my office space was in talking to a colleague and I couldn't get on with stuff with then farting about etc, so I thought I'd quietly check my personal emails on the office computer and make myself a coffee. So I typed Hotmail into the browser, clicked on the site and without really paying attention to anything went off to make my coffee... WELL... when I came back, you'd have thought someone had died...

... I'd typed HOTMALE by mistake and clicked on the site without noticing... the pornographic imagery was quite graphic apparently...

I wont mention anything about Freud or his slips...  :pok: :D

I once took down an entire computer lab at the University. I don't want to talk about it, I'll just state for the record that all this logging going on of who does what is a horrible concept!

Such a good film. I've been watching a lot of 40s/50s movies lately, maybe it's time to revisit the 80s?

I remember in my teens my older brother spending a weeks wages (about £80-odd) to buy Aliens on VHS just after it came out and me and all my mates were so impressed because he owned that film now... How things have changed!!!
