Cleaning and sharpening my new Robinson 'scout knife' yesterday  :tu:

Wow that cleaned up nicely. o.o

Thanks Sazabi,  :salute:

The swedge had been sharpened with a rough file then the whole knife had been used as a reamer so the first inch of the blade was 'saw like'  :dwts:

I need to put a little more time into sharpening both the blade edge and the swedge but its nearly there now  :tu:

This possibly belongs here:

GEC buffalo horn Letter opener.

Tiny...

Does not come in a paper tube  :ahhh

It is a shame that it does not have any etching or GEC stamp on it, something that GEC seems keen to put on all its knives.

For the price these go for you would expect at least an etch or a shield...
Came totally blunt..   :D

Blunt yes but one of those could easily become a murder weapon.

If you stab some one with a knife the brand in question would seem trivial but do the same thing with a letter opener and journalist will be all over it creating a PR disaster.  ::)

oooh and definitely belongs here :D

Goatlord that's a nice blade. I thought they were bigger for some reason

They usually are. This one's more like a backpackerd bolo that I take with me for 2 night trips. I have a few that are about twice its size but, they aren't really used much here. Folks tend to go for shorter, more manageable bolos

Well considering that extra reach could be hazardous it makes sense

Gathered some barnacles, from Syro's island rudimentary rocks with my Bahco. Dived and swimmed  with it and it stayed in place. This is the knife for me. I'm going to get some more.

Actually the ONLY fixed blade I have at the moment, I present you...

This old ugly thing :D

It's about 20 years old Marttiini Leuku 250/2. It has very weird ugly finish (probably why it was cheap), but it served me well when I was a teen and right through the military service...
And let me tell you, this thing can chop wood  ;)

Hehe, you have to be finnish to understand it I guess... a workman's puukko is seen as a tool, not always too pretty as opposed to the dress puukkos, which are almost like jewelry...

In any case, yes, that one has served me well for about 20 years and while it might not be perfect size for whittling, it is a good all-round knife  ;)

Bill hooks were made for all kinds of wood working in the countryside,
Every area had a different version depending on the type of job/wood in that area

Interesting info Tony :tu: I'm not real familiar with a lot of knife terminology but thanks to good folks here, like you, I'm getting smarter every day. I have a pruner that Peter sent me that's similar to the Northwich (235). It's a slipjoint though.

At one time I guess every blacksmith would make his version for the workers in his area so the blades would vary according to the tasks and vegetation

Lots more here

And if you click on Rob Bell's link you will see some English hedge laying using a bill hook  :salute:

Some awesome blades there

A National Society that's committed to the preservation of hedgerows? AND legislation to protect hedgerows? AND an annual competition? Ya'll must be serious about hedgerows there!¡! I think the hedgerows are some fine work myself, a true art. I couldn't find the Rob Bell link.

Aaaah, I see. I thought that's what you meant. Still cool stuff :tu: Thanks for the educating :tu: I'm like the resident 6 year old here when it comes to knives. I know the knives I like but can't tell you why. Tom gave me a good lesson a while back in the slippies thread about F&F, W&T etc. Thanks for being so 8) about all this.
