Model 1961's from 1977, v.3 and v.4
on: October 01, 2019, 10:38:40 PM
Thanks to VoetSAK, I now have a version 3 Soldier/Model 1961 from 1977 to go with my version 4 from the same year.  I've always found it interesting that they didn't make this version change at the end (or beginning) of a year.  I was telling a friend the other day (who happens to have been born in 1977) how lucky he is to be able to collect two BYSAKs!

Is anyone aware of another instance where two of the six distinct versions of Model 1961 can be found in the same year?

With these two 77's, from the back they appear (are) identical:

And both have the lovely '77 year stamp on the shank:

But flip them over and on the top scale the version 3 and 4 differences are clear:
~   Old cross versus new cross on red shield.
~   W-K stamp in cross and rotated 90 degrees clockwise (compared to version 1 and 2) versus W-K stamp moving to the small cartouche at the bottom of the scale.

Not affected by the version 3 --> 4 version change is the cap lifters, which both have the ground edge and no wire bender/stripper; the hollow bottom pivot for mounting a bail or lanyard; and the small-v VSSR tang stamp.

Doubtless old news for some, but I find it quite interesting myself!  :)

Great info!   :tu: Always nice to find 'back-to-back' changes. Nice they can be verified with date-stamped soldiers.

A lot of my chronology study requires finding copies with just one difference to 'prove' they were produced in close proximity...but are difficult at times to then prove which came first.  For example, I think I have all the c. '85-'86 changes in correct order, but it's still not 100% certain.

Great pics guys  :like:.

Another '77 MTO member here  ;).

I also bought a '05 and '06 for my boys (their Birth year SAKs), and a limited edition Pioneer 2016 for my little girl, but if I find a 2016 Soldier (the "new" version) I'll probably buy that one for her as well  ;).

Thanks guys.  I find these Model 1961 Soldier SAKs endlessly fascinating.  I'm going to give one of this pair of 77's to my buddy as his BYSAK. :)

Here's my own father-son pair:
