It's a Scottish thing involving big stones and brooms... It was mainly done historically when Jocks got bored in the wintertime... that and belting each other.

When my dad used to work on Highland estates waaaayyy before I was born, one of the jobs he had to do was check if the ice on the loch was thick/strong enough to play curling (different estates would play each other and it was a serious affair). This involved him walking to the middle of the loch to see if he fell through... I'm not kidding.  :ahhh
