BO Wave+ new condition?
on: February 10, 2018, 08:41:34 PM
Hello,

I’m new to the forum and the MT world.  I recently received my new BO Wave.  I notice the finish included a few scratches.  I was wondering if this is normal for a brand new BO Wave directly from Leatherman.  I understand this is a tool and scratches will be unavoidable.  But I was hoping at least to be the one to make those scratches.

the BO models of all brands will show some faint scratches,  even when new, as the coating scratches easily.

any deep scratches should not be there on a new tool

Welcome to the forum

A brand new Leatherman shouldn't have any scratches on it and if it bothers you then you should send it back.

Having said that being BO it will surely get some scratches as soon as you start using it.

To be honest, looking at your pics it's hard to say. BO tools aren't really meant to be pretty, it's a purely functional finish and they're always a bit rough looking if not a bit patchy. Having said that the scratches on yours do look a bit deep to the point where you see the metal underneath... I can't remember any of my tools looking like that when I got them.

Does the black oxide come off on your hands a bit when you handle them? If it doesn't, then I doubt it's new, they're always a bit mucky at first until you start using them or give them a good clean.

Anyway, like Steve says, if you're not happy with it send it back and get a better one. The first bo wave I had was utter cack as it had a number of issues... the second one was ace!!!

Welcome to the forum by the way!  :D

Agree 100% the more battered and beat up the better - it's such a beautiful look!

The example shown is a little more scratchy than I would accept in a new MT.

Thanks for the replies.  To answer one of the posts, it was a bit oily and the black was coming off a bit on my hands which I think indicates it is new.  But I don’t like the scratches, so it will be going back.

Here are a couple of more pics.

How are the lock ups on all the tools? Do they have play? While the scratches are a little more than they should on a new tool but if the tools all have firm lock ups and I am the one thats using it, I may not return it. I have received many new LM tools that have less than ideal locks. If you receive a replacement with those problems, it could get even more frustrating... Probably on the first or second use, that's the outlook that you may end up with. That's the trade off for getting a BO tool..

My feeling is send it back.  If at anytime you are unhappy with a new tool purchase send it back.  No amount of what seems to be normal will make you feel better about it.  A new tool shouldn't make you question condition.

It does appear the BO is light opposite of the branded handle.

It appears the stainless is visible.

Send it back!
