old sak
on:
February 10, 2018, 11:46:40 PM
So I've been looking for about a year for an old sak. Really any of the 1908 variety. I don't want a collector's item. Because I want one for edc.
I've done a bit of modding which I will post. Including climber, climber with pliers, cyber tool with pliers removed, and upgraded the led on a spartan lite. Now I have my sights set on making custom g10 black scales for a 1908 Sak. But even the ones with scales in poor condition seem to sell for 100+ on the bay. Any other ideas on where to get an old 1908 to restore...

So just thought I'd let everyone know.
We have been in touch and I am still shocked. I want expecting the generosity. We've already exchanged shipping information and the details required.
As a side. I wanted to send something back. As I have been trying flies for about 25 years and I also tie ultra realistic trout flies I'm sending some back.
Still amazed.
Oh and yes. I do agree. Use your knives. I think using a old sak as an edc is the perfect way to appreciate it. Even having to take it apart and refurbish. Even better. Because I can make it my own. Ive been thinking either black g10, black bog oak, or a blaze red g10.

Well, it only took two months on a slow boat from Europe, and delivery from our national postal service, but thanks to the generosity of Uli, a 1939 P victorinox sak arrived in the mail this week. The stainless tools are in excellent, used condition. The knife has been sharpened, but not significantly. The scales are in need or replacement...which is exactly what i wanted. I couldnt be happier.
Pics to follow.
Now i assume that the liners are meant to be all straight, but can people post a few closeup pics of good condition 1908 saks as a visual guide.
Also, I would like some opinion for the restored scales....
1. European bog oak.
2. American oak.
3. Paper ivory micarta
4. Bright red micarta
5. 100 year old douglas fir, salvaged from a building.
6. Something else?

Although bog oak can be a bit dark its a nice feeling to know you made use of something that was alive and kicking possibly thousands of years ago, likewise the recycled DF as Mech says its closer to the right timeframe
Of course, if you want to drag it into the 21st century the white Micarta wood look great too, that said i would go with either 1 or 5

Cow/water buffalo horn makes for nice scales. Available from most knife supply places, pretty durable (I have many 70 yr old horn knives that are in great shape), and polishes up really, really well. And sort of "correct" as well, since Victorinox has been using horn for scales since well before WWII (if you care for that sort of thing). Downside is that it smells like burning hair when cut.
If I were going to do wood, I'd go for a hard, closed grain wood like maple, cherry, rosewood or teak. More durable than fir/pine and less apt to get stuff stuck in the open pores like an oak or ash.

I’d lean more towards a brown micarta to give it a closer to OG look but any of the choices would be cool. Looking forward to seeing the results.

Pics later today.
I have all the types of handle scales together. To compare.
I'm unsure of what to do yet. Either restore as close to classic, or restore with modern scale material.
I am leaning towards modern material because the micarta really stands out. But I also like the bog oak.

As promised pics of the sak. I personally think most people here including myself would be happy to carry this as is......but, its mod time.

Ok. So i have ruled out the DL.fir. i did try to put a nail in and it was near impossible. It is hard and dry, but so far i like the other options better. Pics to compare.
Bog oak, ivory paper micarta, red micarta, and dark oak.
I think the red micarta really stands out, and looks similar to celidor.

I would lean toward the denser of the two oak as I have an affinity to the wood. Extremely durable material. Sealing up the pores with a modern finish shouldn't be a problem. Would think about using a stain that leans toward the color of the original scales without overwhelming the wood grain. Either way, wood and wood grain just seems right to me. Micarta, depending on the type, can also be period correct as it's been around since 1910 when George Westinghouse created it. How well it resembles 1910-1930 Micarta depends on the materials and resins used in the slab you use for it if that's your choice.
