Is anyone else too cheap?
on: February 11, 2018, 03:05:27 AM
I think I'm just too cheap for my own good sometimes. Passed on multiple good deals in the last few days as I can't bring myself to cough up the dough.... Citizen Chrono for 190 bucks off, One of the OD Green farmers, Oakley shades......

My wallet enjoys it, but sometimes I wish I could just go for it.

Anyone else have trouble taking the jump
I'm a total legend..... in my own mind- Herley

For the $5 and $10 tool challenges, I've had my eyes on ebay like a hawk.

And due to budget constraints, I've had to watch a LOT of insanely good deals come and go.

I'm generally also just kind of cheap. Maybe 'broke' is a better way to say it. I have to be getting a pretty insanely good deal on something to pull the trigger.

It would be great to have essentially infinite funds for buying stuff on ebay, but there's also something nice about knowing you're limited, so you don't get sucked into a bidding war, and pay more for something than you should.

I think of it like this. Cheap: buying used jeans. TOO cheap: buying used underwear. :D

I'm not cheap. I am just content with what I have and enjoy having $$ in my wallet  :tu:

I wouldn't say I am cheap, but I simply don't have spare cash for MT's etc once all the essentials are taken care of. Doesn't bother me as I basically have what I want.

I prefer to trade or gift wherever possible so that someone has something they want in exchange for something I want. Having been the recipient of much generosity from members of this site, I hope I have reciprocated in whatever way I can.

Have to say though, I get enormous pleasure seeing all your collections and the love, devotion and knowledge that goes into them

I feel like a cheap smurf for always wanting as much as I can get for as little money as possible.
Truth be told, that's also because I'm a young man with his own house which still needs some work and $$ in it.
So I think I just realise that there's other stuff to pay rather then some toys for myself.
Then again, getting higher value tools at lower prices means I get less chances, but all the more fun when I find such a killer deal.

I ALWAYS feel guilty when receiving a RAK though. Simply because I can't return the favour... yet!

One day I'll have some spare cash that I can spend on something for others. And you guys will know it!!

I have a theory that everyone has a "threshold of expenditure".  That is they don't think much about spending money if it is below a certain amount.  For example I don't give much thought or concern to spending under about $20 but over that I give it consideration.  My late brother in my opinion had a level that was a lot higher (maybe $1000  :)  Of course this may depend upon the type of item(s) being purchased and I suspect it also relates to one's financial position.

I have a distorted view of this, because I am not looking at purchases from the point of view of someone who doesn't already have tools.

When I started my exploration, I spent an obscene amount of money trying out different tools for their various design attributes and build qualities. Now that I have an established array of tools, many of them modified to suit my own preferences, very little of what is on the market appeals to me. I have sold of the vast majority of what I bought, but still have way more than I need. The ones that tend to get carried most, are either obsolete models, or modifications.i don't have the yearnings to try new stuff like I once did, and most things that I see would need modifying in order to compete with what I already have. This means I do not see the same value in tools that someone else might.

Threshold of expenditure  :tu:.  This certainly would play part in what I would spend on certain items.

everything is so much pricier past few years, can't blame you for hesitating. Especially Leatherman and Vic MT's, I'm glad I got mine before market went north, but also I don't see the justification on such major increases  ???

This is also a time related thing
I went a bit crazy a couple of years ago when I started collecting.
I'd find something on the Bay that I wanted and would make sure I won it  - Not a good strategy for bidding   :twak:  And definitely not cheap.
Now I am a lot more considered.

But you know - I would say no-one on this forum is cheap - As we appreciate quality, function and capability

So I prefer the term frugal - ie you evaluate the price against the function/desire etc - And if it meets your criteria  (which varies for all of us)  you buy.

So I would change Lynn's definition to :
Cheap: Buying a Chinese knock off - Hopefully no-one here
Frugal: Making sure you always got a good deal for new or used
EDIT - Add: Regular buyer: Just buys it without too much thought
Collector: Buying stuff you don't need - Apart from 'for the collection'
Crazy Collector: Buying stuff  no matter what - Certainly a lot of those on the Bay - And maybe a few here too   ;)

And of course you can be a frugal collector   :D

I would caveat this. I buy chinese knock-offs, but like I say 'I waste my money so you don't have to.' Buy cheap tool and  review it so others don't fall for junk.

But also... because I'm cheap. :D

I mostly don't buy knives. But I DID get one of the $3.87 knives, a lockback with wooden scales. And I purchased one of the absolutely terrible $1 Ozark trail knives years back.
