Long Nail File--still around?
on: February 20, 2018, 09:47:00 PM
Recently noticed this Climber from a Swiss seller on Etsy. I thought the long nail file was discontinued around 2000, but this Climber is obviously of recent production--modern box and new brass scissor rivet. Our Wiki says that a limited run of them was done from old parts in 2010--was this one of them, or another batch?

Don't know anything about it, but it has the look of "old oil" on some of the tools.

It looks like it has the "Swiss made" tang stamp which puts it after 2005, I think.

Have no idea about the limited run thing

Seem a couple of modern ones around recently - Pretty expensive

Maybe Vic found a batch of them in a cupboard in the factory and used them up?

Im pretty sure that file last appeared in the 80s, so it must be some limited run thing if new ones are appearing.  Very odd tool with crazy weird backspring and that file is attached only to the liners.

Can you elaborate about the tool being attached to the liners? Isnt that how they're all attached?

The LNF has a small pin of it's own that doesn't extend past the 2 scissor liners, and the spring is split to allow it to work both tools, pretty neat.  :tu:

Cheers Gus!

Also on the LNF Climbers, all of them are no keyring, I have only seen LNF and keyrings together on older Champions (more often a bail).

Correct, because it wouldn't work :)

If I recall correctly, those LNF Climbers were still in the German (?) Victorinox Catalogue in 2012 2006 or something. I should check that.
Didn't I sell you one? ;)

I thought they were still in a more recent catalogue as well. They could still be ordered new from the distributor in November 2010.

Edit: found them in the 2008 catalogue.
Edit: and in the one from 2011 :)

Yes, and I have picked up one ore two others since then.

I think Vic might have found a cache of LNFs and made Climbers out of them, they have the newer tang stamp post '05, but hard to figure the actual dates beyond that.

Interesting, thats one part ive worked on a few times but never found new for my collection.  It increases the assembly difficulty quite alot since that file is riveted right to the liners.

I can attest to that, the assembly is pretty fiddly without a proper jig. I remember having to use several tools at once and several attempts to get the thing together without damaging any of the liners. The spring and file did look like older pieces, being less polished with sharper edges like the older tools, but the scissors are the newer riveted design with the new handle shape.
