Knipex Plier Wrench 125mm quick size comparison
on: February 23, 2018, 07:59:16 PM
Just got this little boy in the mail today and wanted to share a quick size comparison, as a lot of people seem to be surprised when they ordered it.

Here it is with a familiar companion..

Crunch & 125mm Plier Wrench at max opening.

Although the Crunch seems to open wider it will not have a firm grip at a nut that fills that space up completely.

Due to the clever design the Knipex has a powerful grip which is more than adequate for its purpose.

Very solid and presize feel.

I'm happy  :D

I've had both the Crunch and plier wrench now and prefer the plier wrench. The part on the Crunch where the bottom section clicks in leaves a little to be desired. I just got the 125mm Cobra pliers myself and are curious to play around with them.  :climber:

You're right there Joe. The Crunch is a compromise, but a nice one for me.
It's supposed to compliment the Plier Wrench, ... probably until I've got a Cobra

A very appropriate use for this tool!  Everyone should have a set of pliers at the table!  :D

Would it be possible to have pliers with a similar mechanism on a multitool?

There wouldn't be a problem making a non-folding version, where the handles just contain some tools.

But would there be a way to make it a folding or sliding head tool?

One could certainly make folding handles. And for the 125mm that might make it into a true pocket champion. The plier head section is fairly large though, so that would fill the folded handles pretty much all by itself. Maybe add some outside tools Ă  la Wave, but that would make it thicker and clumsier too.

Hi Raukodur, that would be great.
But I cannot think of a way that would make it more pocketable, only slightly reshape the package.
Maybe by removing the one handle at the lowest/widest position by allowing to fully pup out the button?

...nah.

I was thinking along the lines of some amputation and significant modding. With the tiny one that could be a 6-7cm long pocket rocket. Conceptually something along these lines:

It was quick and dirty, but shows the concept. A guy named Niko Sinogowitz had made a 3D model of the plier available already, so with a few changes that was the quick part. Yay for him sharing! :tu:

The handles would need locking of course, and the entire thing could certainly be upstyled, but as a concept that could be great? It is even tempting to give it a shot at some point. (Far too busy for that now though).

Vidar, would that design not work but with normal butterfly handles, or maybe sliding handles Gerber-style? They would have to be deep, and I agree with you that any extra tools would have to be on the outside, but that could still give you the main stuff we all use - long reach flathead and phillips, file/saw, knife

They would have to be deep, and I agree with you that any extra tools would have to be on the outside, but that could still give you the main stuff we all use - long reach flathead and phillips, file/saw, knife

I thought about that setup for all of 5 minutes or so, so it was very much a rough sketch of one possible way to do it. I did consider butterfly handles, but believed the sharp handles that would give with use would be a bad thing. Outside tools folded the other way as with Wave would help of course.

I've considered sliding handles a fair bit for other stuff as well, and they tend to need more parts and take more room overall than say a simple rotating mechanism. A sliding feature is also best with straight items, and the plier heads are not all that straight. (With a custom design that could be changed of course). It would remedy the sharp handles though.

I roughed out the sideways opening handles as they would give a good grip surface and could easily be made to fit very closely to the existing head. And if need be that extra hinge might help in tight spots for for gripping something from the side at a flat surface. The downside is the need to lock the handles in position for normal use.

I also didn't really think too far about adding other tools to it - I thought more along the lines of a companion to some other multi-tool. I'm not sure the short and rather blocky shape when closed will provide much of a handle for say knife use? Of course you would save some handle weight over two different tools each with their own handles. What I did consider was adding a holder for a standard 1/4" screwdriver bits - there might be room for a short double sided bit or two with the plierhead. That could be useful without getting in the way of anything else.

I think the concept is nice, but ideally one should change the head and/ or angles of the handles too for a more compact version still. It would be fun to give it a go, but just not enough time around these days.

Anyway, that was my brain droppings at the subject. I'm sure others can try some other approaches? That plier kind of deserves a truly pocketable version. :)
