Long lost friend is back
on: March 09, 2018, 12:52:39 AM
My first pocket knife was given to me by my father back in the early 80s. I did lots of whittling and got a cool scar from one of my first tries. That told me to work away from my body.

I also used the scissors a lot for paper crafts, and cutting custom stickers etc.

Somehow somewhere I lost it when I was 15 or so.

A few weeks back ot came back into my mind and I thought it would be a nice reminder of those good old times with dad if I could find that exact same model back for me.

I knew it had large and small blade, bottle and can opener and scissors. So 3 layers.
On the back was a corkscrew and an awl.
And I cannot remember it having any keyring because I pocket carried only due to it. That probably helped it sneaking out of my pocket and disappear.

The ever so greatly SAKwiki as well as Saams website and aother helped me finding out what model to search for.

1.5 weeks back I was lucky and found one on the Bay for 14,95 $. It looked good from the pictures, apart from the scales. But I couldn't see the awl to make sure that it really is an early 80s model.

Today it arrived. And the awl has no seeing hole.
So it's pre 1985 like I was looking for.
All blades/tools look like only use twice of at all. But the scales were beyond my polishing abilities. I assume the poor guy spend it's whole life neglected in a kitchen drawer between other sharp edged objects.

So here it is then after a clean, some oiling and a scale change. My very first pocket knife and tool model there was. Thanks Dad  :climber:

Do you want to guess the model?

I think I'll add this old style mini screwdriver.
It should fit age wise

Cheers, Matt.   :drink:

Well, no backside hook, but still.  :D

I EDCed a Supertinker, the only difference is a phillips instead of corkscrew. I only switched away from it when i reluctantly gave in to carrying an Explorer, because my vision for fine details isn't what it used to be. otherwise, I'd have been content carrying that SuperTinker forever.

The climber is just as nice. Besides its connection for you from the past, it should be just as good for you in the future. Plus, like you said, like having an old friend back.  :tu:

I'd say Original Traveller or Climber without keyring.

Thanks Lynn! Yes... no hook....right?  :o

This is my first 3 layer since back then.
I think the size is still good for the watch pocket.

Explorer you say?
Hey, stop giving me ideas...  :D

Btw, it's an original Traveller

I really like those. Climbers are nice, but I don't like key rings and the hook is useless. So this one checks all the boxes for me.

Here's one I got from Benner:

Loved your story!
My dad didn't give me my first knife, but he did teach me how to change the oil in my VW Beetle and change the tire (loosen lug nuts before you jack it up ).

Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Thanks FolderBeholder!
I had a 1972 Beetle myself once.
It was... reliable  :D

As I was fondling and carrying my new old original Traveller for a bit now I found that it would be the ideal everyday SAK for me.

But I don't want to mess it up, so I went and got myself a new Climber & put plus scales on it  :tu:

...aaand added the pin (why is it shipped without) and mini screw driver.

Looks like an old Climber to me. It was my first knife as a kid too. I am currently waiting for mine to come back from Switzerland where it is receiving some tlc. Been a bit of a delay so the Brit importers told ne but sent me a free Classic SD as an apology.

A free Classic SD, that's a nice gesture  :tu:
What was the problem with yours?
And do you need to pay for it?
I've never sent a SAK to Victorinox für Service.

Well yes, the original Traveller is an old Climber but without keyring. They stopped making them somewhat mid 80s.

@MTMatt the blades were blunt and a bit battered so I thought I would send it in to try the warranty service. The maximum charge for unwarrantied repairs is £9.99 here in the UK which is silly cheap. I sent the knife off end of December and they said they did not send off until January hence the apology and free knife. They are also waiving any fee due to delay. Turnaround for a knife sent to Switzerland is about 10 weeks  :climber:

10 weeks would be quite a test for my patience.
But £9.99 for the general service is great  :tu:

Found a SAK from childhood, Im 65, it was ancient when I found it in the basement!
Weird camo, little bale,  logo but a little off, tool set is Spartan, but our good buddies at Spartan Saturday discovered it was actually French!
But we played knife games, carried all sumer especially when fishing. Carved initials on the big tree- who could climb the highest?
In The Bronx btw....

It's invaluable if it brings back all those great memories  :dd:

That's why I was hunting eBa... for the orig. Traveller.

Would you care to share a pic of that Frenchy?
