Make Leatherman rulers more visible?
on: April 08, 2018, 05:00:28 PM
I'd like to make the ruler on my Charge ALX more visible. I can't figure out how. The glow in the dark powder I mix with epoxy is too thick. Glow in the dark paint...well I don't know if there are any out there that will stay on. I'm willing to make my own concoction but can't seem to think of what/how to use. Any ideas would be very nice.

does it need to be glow in the dark?  most use either a sharpie or enamel paint/nail varnish to make them show up better

Sounds like a combination of them two methods could work. Nail overcoat (varnish?) With glow in the dark powder in it?

All the powders I've seen have granules too large.

If you're measuring something in poor light you're probably also doing other things to it (gripping/cutting/sawing etc) in poor light so you would probably be using a flashlight anyway.
I wouldn't worry about the glow-in-the-dark aspect.

Honestly, trying to measure in the dark might be trying too hard. But if you want to try, something like these might be the closest you're going to get. https://www.glonation.com/glow-in-the-dark-products/bright-time-glow-paint

I've seen them used to make low light switch markings. Never for something as tightly engraved as the ruler on a multi, though. Is it for a polished or BO tool?

Another idea would be glow in the dark cerakote. Or do the GitD cerakote for the whole then, then fill with black. That would probably work. It would be expensive, but it would work.

But let us know how it goes. I'm curious.

Combining a couple of ideas here... there IS glow in the dark nail polish.

Pain it in, let it settle in the crevasses, wipe off the excess, wipe down tool with nail polish remover to get rid of remnants, but lightly, so as not to remove it from the ruler lines. That might work.

Ah, so much easier. Should have figured that there already is nailpolish!

they make two part GITD paint for gun sights that works nice; may be alot to buy just for
ruler marks, but formulated & there's no guessing. Check Midway or Brownells

How about using this technique VERY carefully?

If you remove all the tools and do a good taping job you can make the ruler lines thicker/deeper depending on your choice.
