I know Stayglow doesn't (probably because since they're solid, they use old molds), but I think translucent scales still have the slot.

Thanks, I was thinking the same for the stayglow, can't find any mention for the translucent, hopefully someone who has one will chime in

It would be best to ask in advance as YMMV whether or not the scales have a slot for the straight pin, unless they're "plus" scales with the pen slot. The "plus" knives with corkscrews come with pen, straight pin and micro screwdriver.

I just checked my stash of 91mm scales in black, red, ruby and silver tech. All the "plus" scales have a slot for the straight pin along with the slot for the long pen.  Some of the other "non-plus" do and some of them do not, including a set of new "non-plus" ruby scales that don't have the straight pin slot. These are not "pulls" from old knives but new, unused scales. Also checked some I had put on 91mm SAKs over the past couple years. A set of emerald don't and neither do the black ones. I have four 2015 Woodsman b from the limited Mexico reissue, two with ruby and two with red scales. All have straight pin slots.

My conclusion: Plus scales will have a straight pin slot. Among the "non-plus", some will and some won't, both solid and translucent.

Dang, learn something new every day! I checked two of my more recent SAKs - Huntsman and Ranger - and both have a hole for a pin in the corkscrew bay! Never noticed these holes until I checks the knives last night. I also check my 700th anniversary Huntsman, no hole.

Add one more tool that will be added to my daily carry; a Ranger with a pin.

Is it possible to define a start date for the pin hole appearing in non-Plus scales?

I am aware of at least one exception to this.  I have an old Scientist that came with "Plus" scales that have the ink pen but no hole for a straight pin.

My comment was more about current production and new shelf stock. Had to go look at both of mine; they both have straight pins. Go far enough into the WayBack Machine and there is a block of years with Plus knives made prior to adding a straight pin to them. The Wiki has more information about the straight pin and the time period from implementation of Plus scales in 1985 to the straight pin being added in 1991. Your Scientist is part of that evolution that adds tools and features over time. If they're the original scales, it will help date your Scientist. I know mine are post-1991.

I've got nothing to add other than I love the pin hole in the scale.  Such wonderful addition.
