Trekker or Locksmith...can’t decide!!
on: May 07, 2018, 07:47:03 PM
I have been planning to change my SAKMC unit to the non-serrated, one-handed Trekker, but then came across the Locksmith. I love the added file. I use files way more than wood saws.

The only problem with the Locksmith is the added thickness due to the file and the fact that they are hard to find, thus a lot more money than the Trekker.

Anyone have both, or have used both, that can advise on the two?

Locksmith, every time.  Best 111mm knife ever. :tu:  It doesn't feel that thick either - it's kind of square in the hand, which feels great.  Even better if you get the non-OHO version.

I envy you having the choice of a one-hand non-serrated Trekker! Here we can only get the serrated version of the OH blade.
My answer to your question - Trekker. Solely because of the extra width of the Locksmith which you mentioned. I had a nail-nick Locksmith -  I thought  I'd love it but I didn't.
Three layers on those 111mms is as fat as I like to go, but I know other people (having taken more steroids and done more bodybuilding than me...) don't mind the chunkier models.

I´m drawing the line at 4 layers. I love my Fireman (serrated blade instead of file) but sold my WorkChamp.

Only place I can find the Locksmith for sale here in the US is the official Victorinox webstore. With shipping it’s $79!

Found one on eBay for $64 shipped, but it’s coming from Russia. Take a month to get here. Not sure I’m comfortable with the seller after reading some feedback. Just not sure, but that’s a lot of $$$ for that knife.  Can get a Trekker for around $50...

I prefer the one handed versions.

I have a Swiss Bianco pocket clipped installed on my Centurion scales, which I slapped on my current SAKMC, my DAK...

I will add the pocket clip to either the Trekker or the Locksmith. I have to say, I am leaning towards the Trekker. The file is nice on the Locksmith, but just not sure it’s worth around $20 extra for it.

I have an older Outrider (for sale over in the sale forum...) and its as wide as I’d want to go. For the weight I could probably carry my Wave and have ALL the tools. Haha!!

If it’s something you think you’ll really carry and use, then I’d get the Locksmith.  You’ll be using it long after you forget about the extra $20.

Pardon a dumb question. Looking at the pic of the Locksmith, I don't see any special tool(s) that would make it better at locksmithing or picking then most other SAKs.  Is "Locksmith" just a name or am I totally missing something?
thanks

Don’t overthink the names.  Pretty sure they’re chosen by marketing, and may or may not make any sense.

To actually smith a lock, you'd be filing the pins to the required lengths, and possibly the detainers, wafers or wards, if not the key itself, and perhaps even elements of the lock body or housing, too... so yes, this could indeed suit such an activity.

Yes, I figured most SAK names are just names, except for a few like Tinker, Watch Opener, some others.
Some don't deserve the name; can't be a Handyman without a Phillips screwdriver.

:iagree: Handyman is indeed an odd name, considering the lack of a Phillips screwdriver.

A fellow advocate for SAK files here(my SAKMC is a 91mm Mountaineer), I too would suggest Locksmith, especially considering you use it more often than the saw.  Usually I'd choose a OHO Trekker for a quick hike, where I have no real use for a file.  But anything urban, I'd prefer a Locksmith over the Trekker.

This being an old thread, the OP will have long made their decision!

Anyway, I have both knives with nail nick blades. You'd better be sure to use the metal file/saw because, compared to the Trekker, the Locksmith is a noticeably thicker & heavier lump.

I wish they made the locksmith with out the wood saw. Does such SAK exist? I’m not bothered about OHO. Blade, file and openers would be perfect for me

Someday, Vic is going to make an OHO Outrider LE and charge triple what it's worth. And I'm going to buy it anyway, like a sucker.

111mm isn't an attractive size category for me but I would take the Locksmith!

I wish there was a 91mm SAK with the metal saw/file AND the saw without having to jump up all the way to the Ranger.

Hmmm - So you don't want the scissors - The most useful and awesome SAK tool ....... IMHO of course ... ;)    :)

Or were you thinking a Compact Ranger ?   ???

I have scissors! On my Rambler!

Personally I find the 58mm version to cover my scissors needs.

They are the gold standard of multi-tool scissors, but my scissors use has greatly diminished. Like Marlowe, a 58mm scissors can handle most awl of my scissors needs.
