Spyderco Clipitool C208GP
on: May 14, 2018, 07:32:34 PM
I just got a Cliptool in the mail, and thought Id share my thoughts on it as time passes.
Feel free to chime in :)

First impressions.

Its surprisingly pocketable, and the blade is really thin and slicy.
The ergos seems good despite the protruding holes on the openers/drivers.
However mine has a lockup of 60% wich means the lockbar has to be pressed quite a bit over to disengange the blade, and the lockbar is really stiff.
The drivers are slipjoint, and a bit stiff to open OH, also the second tool is a bit difficult to OH open without changing grip/hands.
Also the spydieholes are all painfully sharp.
I havent tried the openers/drivers yet, so dont know how well they work.

cool!
I've filed and smoothed the holes on some of my Spydies, it's a common complaint with them.
The stiffness should disappear with use IME, Spydies break in after some opening and closing   :tu:

on the lockup %, some people prefer early lockup, some like having it very securely locked in and with a bit of travel (myself), but I can see both points of view on the subject

I filed the holes with a small sharpening iron, so that issue is gone :tu:

The Tai Chung factory and the Colorado factory tend to have really good fit n finish. The China one don't seem too have such a station in their production line. The Seko one in Japan  tend to have really good fit and their style to be really sharp around the corners as finish in my experience.

I have been using it a fair bit lately, and a couple of things have surfaced.
The blade is an excellent slicer. I wish it had a better steel to keep the edge longer, but it sharpens up very easily, so its not a big thing.
The openers/drivers fold a little to easily under pressure when used for my liking. I guess spyderco had to compromise a bit on the strength of the spring, so it would be soft enough for OH opening of the tools.
