Another Rebar with scissors
on: June 25, 2018, 06:23:49 PM
So, today my wrenches finally arrived from Loki - the post office sat on them for 10 days before delivery... - I was able to start my Rebar mod, adding scissors. Those I bought earlier.

I mostly followed MTMatt's recent post, with a few exceptions.

After taking apart the handles - one of them was easy, the other one was drowned in loctite, it was super hard to loosen -, I removed the spacer and added the smaller flathead to the serrated blade side. Matt suggested removing both washers, but I kept one of them to avoid clumping when opening the knife blade. It made that side a bit bulkier, but it's only noticable if you look hard. Dialing in the screw took a while, but now it's about as smooth and tight as I like.

From the other handle I removed the lanyard ring, and swapped the awl and large flathead. (Explained later.) Added the scissors right next to the file.

After assembly I was getting a bit frustrated, because no matter how tight the screw was, the tools were still loose.  ??? Then I realized I'd need a washer there. I did not have a perfectly matching size on hand, but with my rotary tool I was able to widen the inner diameter of one until it fit the pivot screw.

So, as I said, I swapped the awl and flathead, first just to experiment, to see if it would work, so I wouldn't have to file/shorten the scissors' pushtab on both ends, and voila, it was a success, and I am able to close the tool no problem without having to modify the scissor.

Eagle-eyed ones might notice that now the handles won't touch when closed, but my Rebar had a bit of a play previously when closed, but now it closes with a "greasy" but strong feel and the handles are tight, no play or rattle, so it's a good compromise for me. It feels more solid this way. (Also, judging from photos, some Rebars already come from the factory closing like this, with the handles not touching.)

Apart from not closing "perfectly" - which is a feature instead of a bug for me :) - I only have one, a bit nitpicky issue: the saw blade has just a tiny bit more play than before, but I can live with that as well.

Okay, pictures!

Testing the scissors - cardboard, old T-shirt, paracord, all okay. No folding on the paracord, which is great. All in all I'm happy how the mod turned out, although I'm still considering if I should shorten the tab or not. I'll leave it like this for now, and after some use I'll see.

The Rebar with the added scissors is close to perfection as an EDC multitool, so right now I'm super happy. :)

Nice work.
l did a similar mod a while back but l ended up realising that the pivot on one side was about 1 mm too short.
Although it worked fine and probably wouldn't be an issue, l wasn't happy and l ended up using a pivot from a fuse which is perfect in length. The extra length also allowed me to use the anti rotation washers between all the tools so l don't get any tool clumping.

Wish I had a spare Fuse! :) But sounds like a great solution, especially since it made space for the washers.

Also, thank you guys!

It does indeed! I fell in love with my Rebar again, can't stop fondling it. :) The scissors just took it to the next level in usefulness.  :multi:
