Global Holidays?!
on: October 16, 2008, 11:37:25 AM
This month here in the states we are having "Halloween" Oct 31 of every year, where the kiddies go door to door in
costumes and beg/say "Trick or Treat" and get candy. I luv'd it as a kid.

The adults also have parties (some) and "dress up" usually the weekend before, fun too, especially some of the wench costumes you see! (playboy bunnies, nurses, hookers etc)

I was wondering if the rest of you have a similar event/day of the monster/ghoul/angel?

I will also ask about other holidays as they come, it's interesting to know yours and share mine  ;)

here in Pamplona, Spain this event (dressing up and going out into the street late at night) only happens on new years (after midnight dec31), it's only celebrated on Oct 31 because of american influences... I'm betting noone comes to our door. Although children dress up for school and you'll find some pumpkins for carving in the markets (small ones!)

The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Is Halloween celebrated the same way it is in the US? With kids in costumes going door to door looking for treats,,and some minor acts of mischief? Like TPing trees and houses?

In the UK? Not only do they do that on Halloween, but the other 364 days of the year too!

Vermont in the USA is a little odd in respect to this time of year, I know because I lived there for 4 years in the 1970's.

A term for the night before Halloween used in Vermont, west suburban area of Boston ( where there are a lot of truck farms) and other rural New England "areas " is Cabbage Night.  The children who live in rural areas (i.e. the entire state of Vermont ) go out into the crop fields and collect rotten veggies. Then they go to the homes of prominent people in town: wealthy old spinsters that don't hand out candy, the town banker who forcloses on family farms & homes ( should be a lot of them on the kids and adults list this year ), or the crabby old man that runs the general store and bombard them with the rotten vegi's and fruit.

The night before is also called Gate Night in North Dakota. We were always told that the name came from opening farmers' gates, letting the cows out (which if you mix together a couple herds, is a terrible pain in the ass to sort out).

I call these "Thursdays"

In Oz Halloween is celebrated by people under 10 years old, and occasionally as an excuse for dressing like a playboy bunny/nurse/hooker & getting plastered.

I forgot about the T-peeing trees (wrapping them in toilet paper) and egg throwing and shaving cream car windshields and ringing door bells and running! but Detroit did/does do much worst! eeek :ahhh

I'm pleasantly surprised many countries have Halloween! Back in Chicago as an adult I really enjoyed handing out the candy
to all the little princess's and devils and pirates and super-hero's.

I also used to have a special trick/surprise for the parents walking their kids ( >:D )
I'd have a special box or decoy and in it I'd have a can of "Silly String" (spray spider web?) and tell the parents I have a treat for them too and when they would come close to see, I'd blast them! the kids would luv it! :D

One neighbor would dress up in a scarecrow or dummy like costume and sit on his porch (looking like a prop) and have a bowl of candy near him and when the kids would come up and get some, he'd jump up and yell!
you could hear the screaming all the way down the block! lol

In the Phillipines we have halloween here as well. Majority of the population are Catholics and go to cemeteries as early as October 31 and spend the night with their beloved, picknicking and some partying up to November 2.

Tomorrow (Nov 27) is the traditional USA holiday Thanksgiving, or as many of us call it "TurkeyDay!"

A day that has become a family/friends day to get together and celebrate good food and togetherness.
originally it was about harvest and the end of it's season (look it up).

It does seem to be a North America thing (and maybe Grenada) but I will have all of you (world)
in my good thoughts  :salute:

Yup thanksgiving is a pretty much North American holiday, but I have experienced it here through friends in college from US who celebrate it here.
