Is it a folder or a fixed blade?
on: July 06, 2018, 01:27:46 AM
Just picked this up today at a local antique shop. I have another one of these but this one is a bit smaller and has some very nice carving on the handle. Marked A.Halling Eskilstuna Swedish barrel knife.
So what would YOU call it? A folder or a fixed blade?

Cool knife Ray! :like: :tu: :tu:

I would call it a folder because the handle serves as a lock the way a liner or lever type lock does on a lock blade knife.....it blocks the blade from closing, but the blade still folds to close.

Nice pics! :D

Thanks for the kind words folks. My obsession with knives has been going on for almost 65 years now and I still get a thrill when I come across a knife that,"trips my trigger"!

Interesting pattern.

I don't quite understand exactly how it is opened.

Is there a slot in the handle or do you pull out the blade from the end, open it , and put back in?

Intrigued and puzzled.

Marcellus: If you follow the way I sequenced the pictures it should be clear.
In the first picture the knife is closed and on the right you can just see the little spring loaded tab protruding next to the pommel. That is depressed and the ball is used to pull the knife out as shown in picture #2. The blade is then manually opened until the stop pin is in place and then the blade is inserted back into the handle until the release tab locks into position. To close, just reverse the sequence.

The barrel knife to me is a folding knife in which the "barrel" handle serves as a locking mechanism.

Rotating blade knives are another oddball. They're not a folding knife, as a blade is always exposed. They're not fixed, as the blade rotates. All of the disadvantages of both fixed blades and folders in one package. A fold-out gut hook could have been added to either a fixed blade or folder (kinda like the Puma Gamekeeper or EMT/Rescue knives).  Only reason this is in my collection is that I needed a good fillet knife at the time, and Sandvik 12C27 is a steel I've had incredibly good results with. Plus, it was like $15.  I borrowed EKA's image as I've got some work to get done.  The sheath doesn't hold it well--my plan is to grind off the gut hook and make a folder out of it.

I have one, but because I'm busy, I didn't have the time to drag it out of the fixed blade box for photos.

Thanks Ray, kind of figured that was the way it looked, but my lifetime career in industrial safety wouldn't let me believe it.
Very interesting piece.
It's a cut hand waiting to happen on both the opening and closing ends.
Still a great knife for a collector.

Oh, I will label it a" folding fixed" that the
user better be paying attention to!

Thanks for all the kind words.I posted it on the AAPK site and someone over there published some info on the maker.
His name was Alfred Konrad Halling and he lived from 1840 to 1921. He started making knives around 1870 up until his death and in 1924 the company was merged with Heljestrand. I didn't realize the knife was that old.
