Need a sheath/pouch for a 1-layer 91mm SAK
on: July 24, 2018, 10:52:43 PM
I've got a really nice 1-layer SAK that I bought new and want to protect. Is there a small pouch or sheath I can buy that will fit it snugly, so it will be protected in my bag or pocket? I have a small one for a Wenger knife, but it's too small to fit the 91mm and have the lid close securely.  Preferably something under $10, as it's not an expensive knife, it's just a new one :)

Charles.

You can make one from leather available at any hobby shop with little trouble, BUT...

There are only two 91mm single layer knives of which I’m aware: the Golfer Special and the Waiter Plus.

If the knife you have is the former, best of luck to you. But if it’s a Waiter Plus I’ll be your friend for life if you’ll sell or trade it to me.  :climber:

It's actually a Schrade Century Steward. Should be CN-31, but the box was marked CN-35. Maybe because it's green and has tool scales? It's got a combination caplifter/can opener, main blade, corkscrew, tweezers, and toothpick. Victorinox sold blanks to Schrade, and they made and sold their own knives under the Schrade name. All the blades are marked with "ISC Stainless Germany".  Got it brand new for a good price on eBay. I like the simplicity of it. I have a Wenger version of the same knife in blue, but I prefer the larger 91mm size for this particular toolset.

+1 for making your own.  That's what I do when I give a SAK as a gift.

There are quite a few people on Etsy who make that kind of stuff (and accept custom orders, the big advantage of micro scale production).

Yet another option https://www.swisstool.co.uk/st/saktory-microfibre-pouch-swiss-army-knife.html

(IIRC, there are mixed experiences with that shop here, though.  )

the cheapest and quickest way, if you only care about preserving the SAK and keeping it safe from scratches and banginng other things in your pocket, the longest finger of a leather or synthetic glove, cut off the glove, usually fits 91mm very well  :salute:

that's a very effective and cheap way to keep your SAKs safe in the pocket, if you don't care about looks  :tu:

Great idea!  If you use some used-up gloves that you might otherwise toss out, then you've created some utility out of nothing.

Instead of a leather slip case you could make a quick and dirty one from a few pieces of cardboard and some duct tape.

You don't need the cardboard for a simple duct tape slip sheath. When I make those, I simply first make a sheath around the knife with the sticky part outside, and then “seal” the sticky layer with a second layer of tape. Duct tape is stiff enough that a double layer doesn't need any cardboard for structural integrity.

I never even thought about not using the cardboard.
