Replace or upgrade? If I lost my...
on:

Recently I was thinking about some of the stuff I have and wondering which ones I'd replace straight away if I lost or broke it, and which ones I'd upgrade with a 'better' (or different) model. What about you?
If I lost my LM 2nd gen Wave I would replace it even though I have a Charge TTi (never really bonded with the Charge). I'd even pick up a second hand Wave as replacement --- I'm not fussy.
If I lost the Charge I would not replace it.
If I lost any of the LM Juice I have (mostly in disassembled states, but some rebuilt, and an untouched KF4) I doubt I'd seek to replace immediately, as they don't really get much use.
If I lost my LM Squirt PS4 I'd get another (I already have a new spare sitting around here).
If I lost my Spyderco Roadie, I'd (probably) get another.
If I lost my Thrunite Ti3 I'd probably replace it, but would first look around for any other new AAA solutions.
If I lost my Bahco stubby ratchet screwdriver I'd upgrade to a Wera pistol grip ratchet.
If I lost my Toppeak ratchet I'd look around for something different/better, but might still end up wit the Toppeak.
If I lost my Vic Classic I'd upgrade to something of similar size in alox, probably a minichamp or rambler or vagabond.
If I lost my Seiko AGS watch I would not be able to replace it as it was a gift from my mother-in-law as an engagement present. But I might try and get a same/similar model, for the sentimentality, or I might go for some new fangled smart watch.

No replacements, not unless I lost everything.
For a start, most of my pliers based users are mods or discontinued, which would involve too much money and effort to recreate. Many are built from three different tools, which again are often discontinued ones. Likewise, I have three 84mm Victorinox with scissors, several Wengers, and other discontinued knives. I have one Victorinox mod, one Wenger mod, and other mods planned with knives alread in my possession. It took me many years to reach this point, and would be incredibly difficult to get back to anything like the current ensemble.
Would I upgrade instead? No. The reason that I'm using these mods and retired items, is that I feel they are better for me than currently available models. Anything that I buy now from current options would be a step backwards.
Any losses or breakages here, would just see me using my other stuff more.

If I lost my 2nd gen Wave, I’d definitely get a Wave plus, or do the Rebar heads on it.
If I lost my BM Mini Grip, I might try out a 940-2 just for fun. Otherwise replace it.

I primarily try to choose things that represent a good value for the money, and offer functions that I think I truly "need.". Because of that, my core carry items are things that are basically instant rebuys if I lost it. Now, I do have a couple of spares on hand for just such an occurrence (which turned out well since my edc flashlight has been discontinued).
All these fall under the immediate replacement category for me:

If I lost my LM Squirt P4 I would definitely grab one of my spares straight away, as it is my sole EDC tool.
If I lost one of my larger MTs that I keep stashed around the house and in my vehicles then it would depend which MT was lost - a Crunch would get replaced immediately by another Crunch ( I have spares), if it was a Surge or ST300 I would probably just grab another similar large MT from my collection.

I don't worry about losing my SAKs. If that happens, I'll reevaluate my wants/needs at that time.

I am sort of in gdoolittle's camp. I have a dozen or so Leatherman tools of various models and a dozen or so Victorinox Swiss Army knives of various models. Two Buck 110's and a couple of Byrd Rescue 2's.
So, if by "replace" you mean go out and buy another exact model, I would have a hard time justifying that. If by replace, you mean "grab another one for use imediate lyrics " whether that means delving into my current collection or my wallet, I guess that means I would delve into my collection and have some sort of replacement in use.
Hell, just over a year or so ago, I only had the Vic Super Tinker and Tinker Deluxe and a Leatherman PSTII and Micra. And one of each of those was a gift. Before a year ago I never thought of having another "on hand" in the event of loss or damage.
Although...
For sure I was beside myself when I thought I lost my Alox Pioneer a few months ago and I was indeed ready to replace that very one by purchasing a new one, so there's that. I did in fact order another Byrd Rescue 2, as it was such a great blade for the money. Had i ruined a Spyderco Atlantic Salt, i would want to replace that. When I broke my Super Tinker, I kept tinkering with it to keep it limping along until a good friend of mine bought me a Tinker Deluxe with wich to replace it.
When my Leatherman PSTII went with my GF to the Galapagos, I immediately took to this very forum in search of a replacement in the event it was lost either at sea or at a volcano or something.
So, I didnt think i would run out and buy new ones, but looks like I would, to replace those at least.

You mentioning that you have a couple 110s reminds me. I would totally replace my 110 if I lost it, probably with a custom shop one. Love that knife.

My 2 or 3 most used tools I have multiples of so I'd use on of those and buy another backup
If I lost any of the others I'd be gutted but wouldn't replace them.

I've always tried to get the best option within my budget...should I ever be in a situation where a tool needs to be replaced, if I can afford more at that point I will generally upgrade.

I have back ups of the tools I trust. That being said I don't have a back up of my Salesman. Over the years I've made sure to never be without back ups. I dont foresee loosing any of my tools but if breakage occurs I wouldn't be without my favorite.
