8 legged freaks?
on: September 18, 2018, 03:01:50 AM
Anyone had a problem with spiders?

I’ve kept walking in the garage and every time the upper half of the door jamb was covered in web, of course I’ve eaten it at least once, but a while back I went out at night with a flashlight and squashed this little guy, a few days later the web was back, and I did the same thing at night, yet on the way back to the house I shined the flashlight up and my jaw dropped, these guys are all over the side of the house! I squashed about 20, walked around front and found a few more but thought I did good, the next night it didn’t look like I did anything! I don’t know what kind they are, but there anywhere from an inch to inch and half, I did some research and it said they don’t like peppermint, and to dump some oil in water in a spray bottle then spray the stuff everywhere, well I did that last night and went out tonight to see there all back out in there same spots..
I’ve read that spraying them with vinegar/water kills them? There not bad inside, only every once and a while one finds its way in but I don’t want to spray these things and have them start moving in! Any suggestions?

I have many.

I just like most spiders better than most humans.

Agreed, but with colder weather maybe soon approaching I don’t want these guys moving in! Other then that if they kept to themselves and didn’t leave webs everywhere I could care less, especially if they catch these other nats and mosquitos!

I dont mess with the spider either.  I'll remove the webs that interfere with my comings and goings.  Its funny to watch my dog walk into the ones that go from the ground to the tree limbs.  I let them be mostly as they do catch quite a bit of other annoying insets.  I go around my home and remove them from under the eaves and anywhere they'll be walked into.  I relocate any that find their way into my home.   Now if I had those Aussie spiders  :o

Every car I have ever owned seems to have a spider living in both side mirrors.  The web gets wrecked when I drive and every morning it's there again all nice and neat.

Okay, as long as they don’t bite, that’s fine. I would keep a contraption for taking those guys outside at hand at all times.

BUT WHAT ABOUT WHEN THEY’RE WAITING IN THE CUPBOARD TO SCARE YOU?!
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Outdoor spiders = less pesky bugs.

I tend to leave those alone. Indoors is a different matter.  :viking:

I'm happy with almost all my outdoor spiders, they eat pesky insects so they are welcome to hang around (except for redbacks, those I kill on sight 'cause they can give you a real nasty bite).

Indoors there is a slightly stricter policy:

Huntsman and other large spiders get gently evicted (can be a bit scary when they run over a body part)
White Tails get killed on sight (again, nasty bite)
Daddy longlegs can stay, might get re-located if too close
Jumping Jacks are welcome, and can be quite entertaining when hunting a fly that is bigger than them.
I just wish they would all recycle their webs, they can look a bit messy after a while.

Do you all take any special precautions to try and spider-proof your houses and especially your cabinets/etc?

Err, I’ll snap a pic of the ones we got, it will have to wait since during the day they all hide, except one but he’s all the way up on the roof line and this thing won’t focus that high..

Those are some scary spiders.

Not so scary, as just a bit of a hairy surprise. Although I do admit when I went to catch them, to evict them (they didn't keep up with the rent) that last little bit where they like to turn and jump was a bit...annoying.
Now I don't live there (Australia) anymore, the local spiders (New Zealand) just don't have the same presence, I almost miss them, almost.

One of the more interesting papers I've read all year.

In a nutshell, spiders. They hear electricity. They have anti-grav. You don't. DEATH FROM ABOVE!

As someone who does restorations on run-down antiques everyday, I see more than my fair share of spiders.
My poisonous bite list so far:
Black Widow bites = 6
Brown Widow bites = 10-12
Brown Recluse = 1

The Recluse bite required weeks of 'lancing' the necrotized area that was swollen to the size of a tennis ball. One year later it came back the size of a ping-pong ball and had to lance it for a couple more weeks.
4 of the Black Widow bites happened simultaneously after a huge nest fell on my arm/shoulder. I can't remember ever feeling so messed up before or since. It tooks days to feel human again. :ahhh

Yet, what is still crazy, I am more afraid of roaches getting on me than spiders. I have no idea why spiders don't freak me out like six-legged insects do.
