Use of your large Folders and show them
on: September 18, 2018, 03:06:17 PM
I just got a couple of large folding knives. I will get the photos of them soon.

The blade is about 8cm, and drop point, handle is thick about 10cm long. So when unfolded, it is about 18-19cm long. The knife is heavy in weight too.

I think I will be using it for gardening jobs, and cutting cardboard boxes and maybe whittling jobs.

What large folders do you have and what do you use them for?

I have a bunch of large folders and am still wondering why I bought them.Just my opinion but for my use anything over 3 inches blade length that I cannot comfortably carry in my pocket is useless.I cannot wear a knife on my belt(most of the time I wear bib overalls so I don't have a belt)due to some back issues. If I have need of a large blade I use a fixed blade knife with a nice rounded handle. For cutting up game I prefer a stag handle for better wet grip.
Most large folders I have found are very handle heavy(Buck 110  and clones) and can easily tire you with prolonged use. Most of their handles have squared edges which discourage comfortable use. Try carving up a half dozen large cardboard boxes to easily disposable size with a 110 and you will get my drift. The only large folder I really liked and didn't mind carrying was a Buck 186 Titan with titanium handles.Same size as a 110 and half the weight.Remove the belt clip and you're in business. Unfortunately Buck discontinued it shortly after it was introduced;likely because it cost nearly 3 times what a 110 went for at the time. Just my opinion folks;your mileage may vary.

To me, it is large when held in my hand felt large and heavy like the Magnum ResQ Jumbo.

You must be a collector?

I like to refer to myself as an accumulator rather than a collector. To me a collector is defined as someone who puts together a group of knives of a specific brand, type, handle material or some other criteria. I accumulate knives of ALL types and uses.If it has an edge and a handle then it s fair game. I always like to get them in great condition but if it is something I find unique or rare then I will get it regardless of condition.
To someone who buys knives with the idea of selling them for a profit this does not work very well. It doesn't matter to me because I don't sell knives. I buy them to enjoy them.
A case in point is a recent purchase I made at an estate sale(euphemism for an expensive yard sale)of several knives. I paid $3 apiece for them. One was a scout knife that cleaned up rather nicely but my favorite was very large(for the pattern)sleeve board jack made by Wilbert Cutlery in Chicago. Actually I don't believe Wilbert made their own knives but rather contracted Winchester to do them.It has very nice bone handles that are worn smooth by years of use(a missing piece on one side has since been repaired)and a propeller style shield. The secondary blade is broken and the master blade is well sharpened and quite shorter than original.A tiny bit of re-shaping and filing the kick to drop the blade back inside the handle when closed and some light polishing and I have a nice every day carry knife that would probably speak volumes if it were able to talk. It's collector value is zero because of condition and I really don't care. I have a knife that someone likely long dead carried with pride and kept it in as good a condition as possible. Even the broken blade can still function as a fine cutting device for patterns which I make frequently.
All the knives I have accumulated over the years have some story to tell and it is fun to try and imagine what they are. For the past five years or so I have been attempting to write a book about some of the stories that go along with the knives I have accumulated over time. Hopefully I will be able to finish it before I pass on.Here is a pic of the knife I bought before I started cleaning it up. Will post pics later of the finished job.
