What if you don´t need pliers?
on: September 21, 2018, 07:53:15 PM
Just over a week ago, I got my first MT, a Leatherman Hybrid. Instead of pliers it sports pruning shears.

So far I like it. It´s a good tool for light, occasional pruning. To get to the other tools (on the inside) you´ll have to open the shears, which isn´t very well thought out imo. Moreover, once you open the shears the handle will quickly cause your palm to blister because the tools do not fill up the handles nicely, leaving the thin handle edges exposed. Gloves advised (when pruning you should wear gloves anyway).

But I do not like the Hybrid enough for it to replace my Felco, or Opinel.

Now about pliers. I need them but rarely, yet I have quite a few dedicated pliers.

And here´s my question for you: if one doesn´t need pliers for EDC, is there any reason to have a MT instead of a SAK?

Theres options like SOG Baton. But if you really dont need pliers, SAK is most versatile tool compared to others

 :iagree:

However I have run into enough situations where pliers and wire cutters were extremely useful. So for EDC my advice would continue to be to carry at least a plier based MT. YMMV.

And here´s my question for you: if one doesn´t need pliers for EDC, is there any reason to have a MT instead of a SAK?

I don't need pliers daily anymore, but still frequently carry a pliers tool.

I don't like my knife, or knife based tool, to be too cumbersome. The pliers tool isn't just for the pliers, but for the other stuff I don't want on the knife. Phillips is a good example of this. A Cybertool layer, or layer with inline Phillips, adds considerable width to a knife, and can tip it wider than I'm happy with. I generally prefer Swiss knives to be no wider than a Ranger. As most pliers tools have a Phillips, that means I can let that tool handle it, and carry a slimmer knife.

I've been trying to acclimatise to carrying a CT34 or CT41, but keep defaulting to a lighter knife with accompanying pliers tool. It just seems a more logical approach for me to split a larger toolset over two tools, but carrying two knife based tools isn't a valid solution for me. For the weight of all those additional liners and backsprings, and redundant blades, I can have the additional benefit of pliers. I might not need them everyday, but I'm more likely to need a pair of pliers than double the amount of knife blades.

Short answer, no.

Always good to have a set in the bag though, just in case.

My MP400 is nearly always somewhere close (in my sock sheath).

No reason not to go with a SAK. But...

A lack of pliers is a life problem. Or are you thinking SAK with real pliers.

depending on your daily life, pliers might be very important.  :ahhh
I see them as my second set of fingers, built for heavy duty,  :multi:

if anything is too sticky, cold, hot, sharp, dirty, rusted, strong, stiff, stuck, or oily for my hands and fingers, they come into play. Also, if the thing I want to grab is in an area or corner that represents a problem of safety or accessibility for my fingers  they are literally a safety measure  :tu:

And depending on what do you do for a living and in your free time, these kind of things are more common than they're not. :dunno:

So I need pliers to do the tasks of my everyday life, but I can see why others would not.  :salute:
My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

I do know of many people that do not carry anything or even own any. I am in the city environment and many holds office based job. Carrying a pliers based tool may seem like an overkill. Strict weapons law doesn't help either. Even a sak may get u into trouble if there's no reason in having them when u are spot checked.

And those bipeds are aliens. Or plant people. Humans evolved to be tool users, and are shaped by our tools. No tools, not a person. Shun the imposter, but do not turn your back on them!

There is a certain satisfaction that comes with being 'that guy', all of the plier-less peons out there come running to, when they need something fixed.  :P

No, you don't have to have pliers with you, if you aren't going to use them. But, how certain are you, that you'll never use them? :pok: :D

I don´t think it neccesary to deal with every possible uncertainty.
People come to me for a knife, or a saw, or shears, but not for pliers.
And sometimes it´s the other way around. I´m cool with that.  8)

PS And the same for screwdrivers  :D

Sure there are times when I don't need pliers.  Those times however are not as frequent as when I do need them.  While I am not carrying a full size pair on my off days I do keep my Squirt P4 with me.  While small they're pretty tough and for me they out match the pliers found on 91mm SAKs.  I actually used to feel the same about scissors.   I didn't always need them so I didn't carry them.  Now I would not be without.  I don't need a full size pair as I can do most everything with my 91mm or 58mm ones.

If you don't need pliers, you could always go with a pair of Knipex Cobra pliers or plier wrench. They work alright for opening up bottles of hot sauce or liquid bandage.
