Miltec GAK - whats the history?
on: September 25, 2018, 09:51:17 PM
I've been looking at Victorinox GAK's at the moment and in particular 108mm's

Can't find one but did find these

Its marked Miltec - now I've seen them copy all sorts of German mil kit but have always been unsure of their origin. Anyone know where they are made? Were they made by Victorinox under contract or contracted out by miltec to someone else?

Also wondering if anyone owns one and if its a decent alternative users to a Vic made GAK?

I can find them for £10 which while cheap seems worth the risk?

I have a GAK that looks just like that one but doesn't say Miltec on it.  Mine says "Made in Italy" on one side of the tang and "Rostfrei" on the other.  It's quite stiff opening and not nearly the quality of the ancient 108 mm Vx Safari that I have.

A finger-nail-sized piece of the plastic scale of my Italian-made knife broke off of its end for no apparent reason.  No impact or any other apparent cause.  I glued it back on with some Goop and it seems to be holding, although in truth I don't really use the knife having lost faith in it.

Miltec is one of a dozen or more companies subcontracted (either by the Bundeswehr or Victorinox) to produce the GAK... Supposedly, this company is from Germany...

I don’t own a Miltec branded GAK and have not actually handled one, but I hear their pretty OK... GAK collectors would add them to their stash...

Here’s a short article for further reading:
