I fell out with a micro toolclip... And then I had a cunning plan

I've had this toolclip kicking around for a while; I've used it, ignored, rediscovered it and lost interest in it, it's just one of them tools.

I really like it's compact design, but the tools are utter garbage, with the exception of the Jaws, they're good, for something of comparable size to LM juice and 91mm vic pliers it pack way more punch... Or grip, or whatever. The wire cutter arent amazing but that's by the by

But one good function is not good enough to call it a multitool. Something has to be done....

And after a teardown and offering it up to a Vic 91mm frame I made a couple quick sketches and sheared out a couple liners from some thin Ali sheet I had lying around.

This keeps the original intended functionality of the toolclip but with actually usable tools.
3d explorer phillips, bottle opener/flathead and VSAK knife and file 'flanking' the jaw layer (the only way to keep body of the jaws and tip of the longer tools coming into contact)

So, there's a proof of concept. I have an idea for shortening and tensioning the back springs of the centre tools.... But it does involve using a 6th pin

Ill be back with more as it comes together

Thoughts and opinions welcome.

Got a template I'm happy with. So on to a piece of carbon fibre. I have roughed out both sides, will tidy them up tomorrow

I think the final design of the CF scales will more resemble traditional VSAK scales, but having the swollen end for the toolclip jaws won't hurt while I continue building, I still need to cut the relief to get to the wire cutters

Im thinking stainless steel liners around the plier jaws for more support than the Ali vic liners and the centre liner between the bottle opener and phillips will need to be a custom thickness, so I'll probably do that in stainless too. The CF scales won't need liners, so, what I gain in thickness and weight using steel I should lose with 2mm CF scales

Other issues include;
the current need to use back tools in each layer to keep some tension on the springs. I'll make a bunch of stainless spacers to replace these

The lock mechanism for storing the pliers needs some thought, theres space to run the lock bar where it needs to be, but the tool is getting wider so a new longer one will need to be made. In the toolclip it has circlips under the plastic handles to retain it. There should be space to do this under the tips of the knife and file

Evening chaps

I haven't had much time to play with this today but I had a quick fettle of the carbon blanks. Ultimately I will make another pair of the 91mm style scales from the 2nd image.

I laid the parts up loose to give me an idea of the overall thickness its likely to be once assembled.

Next to a deluxe tinker and explorer it looks quite slim. It should be under 17mm :)

I got some 3mm stainless tube (3mm OD, 2mm ID), m2.5 taps and some countersunk m2.5 fixings.

So, tomorrow I'll see if I can get 3mm barrel pivots out of that lot, drill the tools out to 3mm, trim the springs and finalise the position of the tensioner pin and upper jaw pin on the next set of scales

More tomorrow

Naahh...just kidding; no "expendable budget" 'til end of year! Enjoy, as it is really gorgeous and functional.
