Long time 84mm fan but should I step up...
on: October 01, 2018, 10:38:27 PM
So for a long time now my EDC has been one of numerous 84mm SAK's

They seem to be just the right size for EDC and are more than capable for the jobs I usually use them for

but I'm wondering if I should step up to 91mm or over them to 111mm for camping, bushcraft outdoors tasks?

I don't go above 93mm, as I don't do locking blades, nor need or benefit from the knives being that long. I have tried the larger ones, but they're not for me.

Step up just 1 mm, to 85 mm, and you have a lot of options.
My current EDC is the S-557.
In the woods, I add a 130mm with a saw.

Lots of options out there, but if the 84's are working for you I don't see a reason to change.

For camping & bushcraft.  It's about the saw:

If you are talking a camp/bushcraft tool then the 11mm or 130mm are terrific companion tools or stand alone.  I'd say yes but if you are considering just a 91mm or 93mm I'd suggest going with the farmer.  The saw is decent enough and the blade is a bit beefier.  You also get a really nice awl.  Good luck.

To be fair I have a few different 111mm models, and the very first 111mm I bought (Forester with red / black scales) lives in my walking bag.  Only problem is, when I'm out with the dog in the woods its the old champion in my pocket I always grab. I just keep forgetting I have the Forester alone too.

Were you ever in a situation where the 84mm wasn't enough? Do you really need a bigger SAK for the tasks you encounter?

 :pok: :pok:

If YES, then try a Farmer (that's a great entry on the 91mm world for outdoors). Ask the same questions again. If YES, go for the 11mm. If not, stay as you are.

Well, this being MTo, it's better to just get one of each and carry awl of them at the same time...
