Beer is a multitool?
on: November 23, 2018, 04:31:52 PM
Recently I saw a post on some social media site from a brewery called Barrel Mountain Brewing.  The beer was (allegedly) called No Bad Days Beer, and, printed on the side of the can were instructions on how to cut the pull tab to make a fish hook.  My guess is that this will work equally well with pretty well any pull tab, although how well any of them work at all is a bit of a question.

Which leads me to my first question, of how well do you think it would work?  It seems to me that this would tear the fish up pretty bad, so this may not be ideal for sport fishing, but I assume it is more of a survival tip anyway.

Which then leads me to my second question- how would you cut it?  I know it is just sheet aluminum, but it is rolled sheet aluminum and would probably be pretty resilient to most hand held cutting tools, unless maybe you just happened to be lost in the woods with a pair of tin snips.

I keep thinking of trying it, at least the manufacturing of it (I don't eat fish, so tearing one up with a beer can for no real reason seems unnecessarily cruel) and I keep going back to using a Dremel tool to do it, which makes it seem like even less of a "survival" type thing, as people rarely get lost in the woods while carrying a generator and hobby tools, or a cordless Dremel.  At least, I don't think that's part of anyone's EDC kit- if I'm wrong, please tell me and I will absolutely apologize....

If it could be done easily enough with a SAK or multitool, and if it would work well enough then I think I would be inclined to recommend this as a possible alternative.  After all, there are a hundred other survival uses for a beer can in the wild, and cans aren't usually too hard to find (at least in my experience) so it would be great to add this to the list.... but I'm thinking it is a fail and a waste of energy.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience doing this?  I have a ginger ale can that hasn't made it to the recycle bin yet, maybe I'll get the Dremel out and see if I can make one....

Isopropyl is an even better multitool.

Personally, I'd say whiskey is the true multitool, given all it's been historically (beverage ,analgesic, antiseptic).  But I don't really see how the fish hook thing would work, especially given can tabs rarely separate with the hole intact. You're best bet is to tape some fishing line, a few sinkers and assorted hooks to a piece of card, and stick it in your MTs sheath. I mean, together, they're thin and weigh nothing. Better than some improvised thingy.

In a pinch I am sure it would work but how many people carry that type of container into the woods  most carry a bottle or 2 of water and maybe a bottle soda because the aluminum can has the possibility to puncture much more easily in a pack :ahhh

Plus, I dont drink and wouldn't have that with me anyways ::) :D

:iagree: with cody about just taping some fishing tackle to a piece of cardboard or having a tiny fishing kit with you  :salute: plus that would work with a plastic bottle,  using it as the reel :tu:

Making the hook is one thing.....catching something with that "hook" is another.....

Not that have I've used it, but if I had to I'd rather make a gorge hook.

I second the vote for stronger booze being a multitool  :drink:

+1

After a few shots of vodka, you can do anything!

 :drink:

If that's not the definition of multitool, I don't know what is...

 :D :D :D :D

This....watching Sam in the last Season of Alone trying to catch a fish with improvised fishing gear for days makes me think that nothing beats real hooks and line.
