Messing with generic SAK scales
on: January 24, 2019, 10:00:24 PM
Not sure if this should go someplace else but please fix as needed.

I've been having fun making cool knives but have come back to the starting point of the classic red plastic scales. I figured a way to use visible pins on the plastic scales, just like you would on a tricked out wood/horn/metal build. What works well is to  fill the holes on the inside of the scales (where the collared rivets go) with epoxy or CA glue. This hardens up the area where you're going to drill through the scales for the pins. Of course, you still gotta peen the little devils but that's to be expected.

In the process I also discovered that you can sand the plastic scales with a fairly fine grade (#600) to clean up the rivets then buff  out the fine scratches with blue or green compound.  Hubba-hubba!  All I need now is some bales for the T/T end.
Blessings,  -Yager

Nice! I have been thinking about this for a while so thank you for testing and showing that it is possible

I guess you did use older, solid scales? Or did hollowed out scales do work out as well?

Nah, I just used regular hollowed out scales but filled the rivet holes with epoxy, which made it as if the whole thing was solid.  Easy mod. except the peening which is always sudden death. Does everybody know where to get the 2.2 and 2.5mm rod? I found good sources.

This is a way-later update on my original topic. I found a jeweler here (in Mexico) to make the little bales that fit over the bottom rivet. Here's the first one, not exactly true to the original cause the bales weren't brass. Nickle silver, maybe. Anyway, here's an example of a little Recruit.
