Thanks all for a great challenge.
I didn't get as adventurous as those food prepping and such but it was great to see the different uses people subjected their tools to.  :hatsoff:
Though I'll end up having made 2 long handles instead of one long and one short, I could see the benefit of having both, so will persist with making the hickory handle so I have the option. Pretty cool that you can have that with one tool.
Thanks to Fuzzy for introducing us to Rinaldi axes, and giving Nix and myself the chance to get to know them even more. Who wants to start a Rinaldi thread? I doubt I would have purchased one on my own considering there isn't a dealer in Australia, but since having Bruce I'd definitely buy one in the future if the price and shipping were decent.

Borg is still going, so it ain't over yet!

Day: 30

I had hoped to get out for a grand finale and use Lyndax to build a small cabin, but it was -17ºC this morning and suddenly, quite out of nowhere, making a big pot of chili seemed like a better idea.

Chili is always a great ideal!

Day 30

Finishing up with the saddle axe. Couple other saddle axe heads. Top is a Sager Chemical Axe 1947 and the bottom one is a Plumb. This has been a most interesting challenge. I had hoped to get out into nature more or get up to my brothers to help him cut wood but it didnt work out. Sure enjoyed everyone axes and pics.  :tu:  Hope we can do it again.     :)
Two more for backup...I like your thinking!

Day 31

More handle work. I have about 100mm before I get to the point where the width of the handle will fill the top of the eye. Trying to make sure I don't twist the head in relation to the handle now

Like the handle on your axe!

Thanks Ray  :tu: It's Spalted Holly, as hardwoods go Holly isn't that great but i figured for a 9 inch handle it will be ok, Spalting itself is caused by a fungus (the black lines) and that weakens it too, but again it's only 9 inches so it will be fine as it's not like i'm chopping my winters firewood with it, i used it because i had it and like it, if it breaks it's easy enough to make a new one but there are many far better woods out there for that job, it was well seasoned and dry to begin with and as long as i oil it regularly and look after it i hope it will last for a very long time :tu:

I will make a mask for it next year in the 2nd Choptober challenge  :D

this was taxing but fun
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Congratulations my good friends, it's been a most excellent challenge!

Sorry I was absent there for a bit, I was travelling for a day, then straight into a right total clustersmurph of a job, but it's finished and done now thank goodness... I'll be back to my usual annoying form tomorrow I promise, but first a good night's sleep... Nighty-night!  :hatsoff:

It is a very nice looking handle. Spalting is not a term I'd heard before a few years ago. As the types of wood like maple and birch that seem to be common in the Northern hemisphere are introduced here, a similar type of thing happens with our native Sassafras. The darkening happens in the heart wood, so the term used is Blackheart Sassafras. It causes nice figuring and shades
https://www.wood-database.com/blackheart-sassafras/

Unless you don't plan on using it for another year, why not make a mask now?
