Oh the horror!
on: February 21, 2019, 12:29:49 AM
Well I finally managed to seriously wound my mighty ST300.  Pulled it out of its sheath on a job today and saw this!  I looked around and found the lock tab laying on the floor on the other side of the garage.  Im not sure how it happened but one of the pins that hold it in place broke off.  Will have to send it off to Leatherman this weekend.  :(

I have had to use Leathermans warranty service before and they have always taken care of me.  Fortunately I've got a backup plan while my black ST300 is on its journey.  Time to get some scratches on this one!

It's my only duplicate.   I use mine every day all day and haven't found a better MT for my work needs.  Thought it would be prudent to get a back up for it.  Glad I did!

Just curious, what is your occupation?

So sorry for the damage. It will get taken care if though. I actually like to see Leathermans and SAKs used til they break. At least they’re getting used!!!

Dang, Clown! You managed to break a 300 without trying! There should be a badge for that(for natural hard use breakage). :o

It's funny the lock pin is still in the hole.

Hope LM gets you a fresh 300 in good time!

I know it's weird.  I used the saw a bit yesterday and the only thing I can think is that maybe I somehow stressed that pin area on the lock tab? I cant figure it out.  I do use it hard though and it has held up exceptionally well to this point. :tu: :tu:

Stainless got a little dirty today!  The stiff tools and tight pliers took a little getting used to.  My black one was all nice and broken in.

Hey Clown,

Does your broken one have the fine teeth on the pliers? My early 300 has the fine teeth and I really like LM's fine toothed pliers. But, in the last few years they have switched completely to coarse teeth.

You know I never really paid attention.  It's out in the car to take to the post office so I'll have to check tomorrow.  Looking at my SS one though I feel like it may have coarser teeth than the the black one.  Why do you prefer the fine teeth? I'm trying to think of the pros/cons of each.  I kind of think the coarser teeth might actually be better for my uses.  Might hold on to nuts a bit better?

I can see coarse teeth holding up better at your job. I work with valuable antiques and coarse teeth get horny for old metal that shows.  :ahhh
The fine teeth do get damaged more easily, so that would be the main difference. I guess, all in all, the coarse was the logical direction for most people.

If you've got one, then you have none. If you've got two, then you have one. If you've got three, then you have two. etc. etc. At least that is what my father always taught me and is my excuse to have two of any tool I use.  :P

Thought I'd give this thread one last bump to the top for the thrilling conclusion of "Death of an ST300".  As expected, LM's warranty department makes good.  Got a brand spankin' new BO ST300 in the mail today.

But the SS has been performing quite well so the BO will linger quietly in the shadows of my MT drawer until called into action.

Thanks Leatherman!  :tu: :tu: :hatsoff:
