How many here are "real" collectors, ie more than just an enthusiast?

At what point does an enthusiast become an accumulator? And an accumulator a collector?

Enthusiast: Likes to get new MT's and SAKs cuz they're really cool and wants to try it out

Accumulator:  Clears out a room so there's someplace to keep all his/her tools

Collector:  Accumulator who has pictures of all tools and has traced it back to the day it was produced.  Also has pictures of future acquisitions (Referring to new tools as acquisitions makes someone a de facto collector  ;) )

Hmmm...  I guess I am a collector. I love Victorinox SAKs and I got few (about 30) that I never attend to use and I searched information about them to know when they produced and so on. And I do have pictures of tools I would like to get  :ahhh  :ahhh
I only got one Leatherman wave and one SwissChamp I am using constantly.

Nothing wrong with being a collector.  They are the faunt of all knowledge--the oracles as it were.

I was concerned that if everyone on the forum were of the collector ilk, I might not fit too well since I'm sort of an ignorant user/abuser of the Multitool.  :ahhh

As far as SAKs go, I suppose I'm an enthusiast bordering on collector.  I'm just an enthusiast for other multis.

I usually pass my old ones off to a new owner.. but..

If "enthusiast" means you can't see yourself not carrying a MT every day and everywhere.. if it means you feel naked without it.. if it means the first thing you do when you get off the plane is rush to the baggage claim, get your bag, and pull your MT from the pocket.. if it means you have carried one on your person for a decade or 2..

 :D

Then call me an enthusiast.

I am damn glad some of you guys are collectors though. All this great info that makes me wish I had the time to collect would not exist I think if we were all just enthusiasts. Thanks to collectors, I know which year it was that I got my first MT, and even which model it was. I would be guessing otherwise. Thanks to collectors, there are pics of cool old tools to look at.

I use mine daily.. that is where the love comes from for me. I am also always on the look out for a better model to carry. As long as there are collectors and enthusiasts, I think I will never want for the information that ensures that the one tool I rely on is the right one for me.

 :drink:

Only problem is... you all make me want to own every damned MT out there just to see if I like them.

Nope but I really did feel naked without a tool around me in the hospital.

Just curious.

I'm more like a kid with Hot Wheels (or Matchbox cars)--Sorta like Corgi toys in the UK.

Matchbox Toys have their origins in the UK  ;)

I'm a MT/SAK user/enthusiast, I haven't the cash to collect. I should say i'd like to be a user, I never seem to get much chance to actually use them  :(

I got a chance to use some of mine yesterday :D

I used the drivers on the Wave to undo an access panel so I could run some wires and the pliers for some  pliering  :D

I used my user Super Tool to cut a hole for a retro fit electrical box :) and a few other tasks :tu:

and the Crescent Electrician Pro to do all of the wiring

all the tools held there own in there respective tasks :tu: The Super Tool really excelled at cutting sheetrock :o :D

The saw, yes?

Before it was stolen, I used the SuperTool saw as a keyhole saw all the time.  Really great.  I haven't used the Vic Spirit saw yet, but I'll be interested to see how it does in that respect.

  • Where is all that water coming from?!
I'm a guy, so I like all kinds of tools. It is a DNA thing I guess  :D But if I have no use for it, I don't buy it. And if, for example, Leatherman got out a new model that seems like an inprovement for something I already have I'll get it. Otherwise, just stick with what I have.

That's why I go by Bob's (J-sews) motto

"In order to be sure of having the right tool for every job, one must first acquire a lot of tools"

When in doubt, buy both.

Or everything in this case, right?  :D
