Funny 108 - help needed
on: March 14, 2019, 04:17:14 PM
Just got this - from the U.S. , actually.
Four-liner tang stamp with small v
First Hunter I see with OD Trooper scales.
Scales don't look glued on, but very original.
By the way, the reamer is broken.
Non-original saw guard, too.

Has anyone seen the same ? Green looks like a natural on a hunting knife.
Thank you in advance.

Not I, but there is a lot more 108 experience here that should be along soon.  Nice one just the same!

It's not the first OD Hunter I see, i've seen a couple of those over the years, also here on MTO, but they are uncommon. Nice find!

Thanks Glen  - very important info from you - indeed the knife looks tight and untouched.
I would love to send it to Victorinox Switzerland for service (the reamer is broken), and see what they come up with, but from previous experience it takes 4 (yes, four) months !
Of course I could do it myself, but the scales won't be as tight as before. Real dilemma for me

I say send it in. It's a long time, but you'll have and/or get other SAK's and stuff while it's away and you'll get a nicely refurbished rarity back. I got a Wenger back from Ibach after four months a couple of weeks ago, but it was totally worth it and I survived the wait. :)

BTW, on the pic, the serrations almost look like home made ?! are my eyes deceiving me ?

You bet - did that with a Mauser recently, and it was worth the wait indeed.

I always try to send something like that to Ibach first.

It's always a long wait, but always worth it.
And, for some pieces, I think originality is key. In this case I think so too.

Nothing to lose, just alot of patience needed :)

It's when you took enough sleeping pills to stop walking around the table, waiting for a phonecall from the Vic dealer.

I think... :dunno:

when I sent my Mauser (registered) to the french distributor, I got no acknowledgement, no receipt, no quotation for repair, nothing.
just like dropping a bottle out to sea.
when I inquired about my knife after three months, I got a mail, but no excuse, they just reaffirmed they were a serious company and that there were delays due to Xmas time.
and indeed, a month after, got my knife back, free of charge and postage.
It did put my patience to the test alright, this one......

So far I've only send in tools by handing them in at my nearest retailer.
I have no idea how long the wait is when you send it to Vic directly, but the postage costs here in Europe always make me drive to the retailer again...

Good luck deciding! :tu:

Nope, they are not custom made.

I live in the country, no retailer within miles.
a couple of years ago, I sent two knives to Ibach directly with a letter in german stating exactly what I wanted done.

One of the knives was a Grand Prix, the other one a standard Ranger. Ibach sent the knives back to the french distributor, not to me.
The french distributor put my name on a padded envelope, threw the knives inside, and out to the Post.

I got an empty envelope in my mailbox....... you bet the PO people know what is inside those envelopes with the distributor name.
Filed a complaint with the Police, never got anything back, but the french distributor did re-build a Grand Prix lookalike with modern parts, featured below, and replaced the Ranger with a brand new one. Least they could do if you ask me, but still a nice gesture.

Just like Mechanickal, I always personally take it to the dealer and when it's back, pick it up in one of their shops, and your story just underlines why. Of course if you're not fortunate enogh to have a Vic dealer nearby, you'll have to take risks like that, it's a pity.

Well now I know where that one went to.  I put in a best offer and then I saw that it was sold.  It went to a very good home, I hope it makes its way back from Ibach to you.
