Recruit repair and upgrade
on: May 07, 2019, 04:31:31 PM
Back in the mid-90s when I was in high school my uncle brought me my first SAK from his trip to Switzerland. Is was a Victorinox Recruit. More precisely, a Recruit Economy, without a keyring, a toothpick, tweezers, and with a different logo.

Although a have numerous SAKs I still EDC that knife quite regularly. It's small (84mm), has no back tools and no keyring sticking out. Perfect for my jeans fifth pocket.

So, after almost 25 years of constant use, I decided to give it an upgrade. Both scales were pretty worn and had missing parts as you can see from the photos.

I removed the scales, cleaned the whole knife and oiled all the tools.

Then I put a pair of brand new translucent blue scales along with a toothpick and tweezers and the transformation was complete.

Now it's ready for the next 25 years!

Recruits are great EDC SAK's.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I want to add one small tip regarding that particular model and all the other models that lack back tools (are there any other?).

Since there are no back tools, there's no third rivet for the scale to clasp and therefore you have to make sure that the scales are perfectly straight. My top scale wasn't and I left it for a couple of minutes in a bowl of warm water to soften it and then bend it carefully to straighten it. You can use a hair dryer or even a heat gun, but you have to be really careful as those can get really hot and damage the scale.

If you look at the photos, the missing rivet is that hole next to the smaller rivet that holds the springs.

Absolutely  :iagree: with everyone else.  I would like to add that it is wonderfull to see a 25 year old user with a blade that has been so well maintained.

Well if you look closely, you'll see some bending on the tip. But hey, I was a teenager  :D

If you take care of your tools, they'll serve you for a long long time!
