Day: 29

Mrs Nix and I went on a road trip to Bozeman today. Feels like the big city to us small town folk.

The trip was well worthwhile--best pistachio ice cream cone ever!

(yes, I did share with Adventure Boy.)

The ice cream was only overshadowed by this new-to-me little beauty:

This Camper was clearly carried, but there isn't much evidence of use. Needs to be cleaned up a bit, but it'll look near-new when I'm done with it. And.....aluminum head on the tweezers!  :ahhh
Very nice Camper and my favorite stamp on the scales. Those hot stamp ones are just ...

I agree, Ray.

The stamped scales are nice, but not the same.

I've been keeping an eye open for an inlaid Camping Camper. A bit thrilled to have found one in such good shape. The main blade has a few spots of oxidation, but I think they'll polish out. I'll polish the scales a bit to take out some of the marks of pocket wear, too, but then I'll just put my own pocket wear marks on the scales. So, what that in mind, my scale clean up will be fairly light and unaggressive.

After carrying the Explorer for a month now, the 3-layer Camper feels tiny and toy-like.

Great SAK, though!   :tu:

:iagree: and also agree with you about the new magnifying glass Jack.  I like how the older one is built, but prefer the FOV of the later model.  I think Robert's custom frame might be the best of all.

Robert’s brass mag glasses are awesome with the same fov as the new one.

To keep the pup theme going.  I used the Explorer to cut off the sticker on a bully braid.

Douglas - I really like the inline phillips as well.

Nice.

Fisher will chew on it some today.  Tomorrow, I’ll break it into its three different strands and most likely it will last another 3 days.

I love that Philips Head too!  It seems like everything is going to Philips head screws these days so it's really handy to have.

Day29:

Been using the Explorer’s scissors out in the shop. Buddy used them to trim some strings off of his shirt, apparently the cat got ahold of him.

Then used the main blade to cut up a French bread pizza I was eating for supper. Couldn’t get any pics of that, but here is the blade afterwards.

Day 30

Figure I’d do another snack photo for comis on the last day.

Ice cream and whiskey again.  I don’t cut it open like Nix, because I don’t eat the entire pint in one sitting.

Day 30 (Last Day) :woohoo:

Explorer helps open up the small Svord for a quick mod, a common problem for this particular model is the belly of the blade always clip/touch the end pivot due to its poor design and fit/finish.  A more detailed writeup will soon be featured in the Edged subforum. :D

That's the one thing I like about a Svord. The whole thing can be stripped down using only an SAK, thoroughly cleaned, and then put back together. No locking mechanisms or backsprings to fool with, neither are there any fancy screw types--just a slotted screw. Unfortunately, it's easy to get the screw adjustment out of whack. On mine, the pivot is often too loose, and the butt screw too tight, making the tip stick out.

I always love the simplicity of a friction folder.  Nothing to fail yet very functional.

The good pricing of Svord makes it quite appealing to most users, but QC does leave something to be desired for.  Uneven grind, machine marks, uneven handle, you name it and I'd probably seen it from them.  However, those quick mods do feel like unique bonding experience to me.

Day: 30

I swapped out the old scales for some plus scales on this old Explorer:

I've come to really enjoy the plus scales. These new translucent ruby scales make the old Explorer feel like a whole new knife!

Pen and pin installed:

Thanks, guys.

Some final thoughts for this challenge:

First, I love a Swiss Army knife.  :SAKnight:

The Explorer has a well deserved spot in the pantheon of SAK's, and for good reason me thinks. While some models come and go, the Explorer keeps on going. I can see why. For me, the Explorer might be my ideal urban SAK.

I thought I might miss the saw blade, but the one time I might have needed a saw....I just left that little job undone....   So....in a sense the Explorer saved me a little work there.

In general, my preference is for a 4-layer or thinner SAK. I have come to enjoy the mighty Swiss Champ, but for EDC I think 4-layers is more than ample and easy to carry. Fairly soon, I'll be going on a short road trip, the Ruby Explorer will be going along. I've come to rely on enjoy the magnifying glass and just feel better knowing it's in my pocket (i've been known to forget my reading glasses......).

The rest of the toolset is perfect for me: opening layer, knife blades, awl, hook, and corkscrew are some of my favorites. Now, with a pen and pin in addition to the T&T, this little SAK feels like a very handy little tool box.

I might prefer to see a nail tool in place of the pen blade, but I do enjoy using the pen blade. So that's a trade for me. Besides, Mrs Nix usually has a nail file handy somewhere......

I don't see the Explorer becoming my SAKMC knife--that position is still well held by my Compacter by Syph--but the Explorer probably should be my SAKMC knife. It's just that good for EDC.  :tu:
