Rant about apps
on: June 09, 2019, 11:03:19 AM
I might be acting silly, but is anyone else annoyed by all these "necessary" apps?

It seems like every bank, business, e-business etc wants to force you to ditch their (often poor) mobile website in favour of a large 100MB proprietary app that requires permissions to 90% of your phone.

What if I'm happy with the old fashioned way of putting the URL in the browser address bar, and thus going to the mobile website? What if I don't want to clutter my phone with unknown quantities? Even too many known quantities is annoying.

Am I just a crazy (young) dude? :butch:

And lastly, but not any less importantly:
Thank you to Micah and the MTO team for the wicked slick mobile website you've given us edc-nuts.
It's every bit as functional as the desktop version, but optimized for touch screens. I love it!
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I don't hate apps, it makes some sense as some require more relaxed permissions that a browser cannot provide.

The thing I hate is preinstalled apps that cannot be removed, especially if they are duplicating another preinstalled app (Samsung has a slew of apps like this )

Are you referring to the Sunrise theme? I would make it default for everyone, but I know how some of you don't like change...

All the mobile MTO themes are quite good, IMHO.  :hatsoff:
But yeah, Sunrise is my favourite

I have never even seen the Mobile App as I just use Tapatalk here when mobile, which I also hate when they "Upgrade" a working version to a bug ridden version for no real reason that I can ever tell?

If it is not Broken then please stop Fixing it!

And yes some Apps drive me Crazy too especially the ones that I only break down finally and try that turn out to be terrible and are quickly removed by me anyway.
There seem to be more and more like this with every day that they sprout up!

I am not one to think there should be an App for all things, the great ones are OK usually but are few and far between compared to the 1/2 baked ones that show up all the time!

Tapatalk IS the horrible mobile app in this particular case. :D

I have a love-hate relationship with Tapatalk.

The image uploading is what's keeping me there...

The main thing I don't like about external hosts like Tapatalk is they will likely go kaput before MTO does.
No one likes broken images.  :D

Yup. I refuse to use them. Everything seem to be getting hungry for more and more data about us users, which makes me want to use it all less and less. My next phone will most likely be a dumb phone. I don't like the idea of paying for the privilege of being stalked (effectively).

I'll still go online via the laptop, of course, but at least I won't have a tracker "fitted" to me when I leave the house. If I wanted that, I'd be a criminal. That way you get one for free. :D

I too hated Samsung apps...never quite understand what they were trying to do with all these pre-installed apps, I think most people whom prefer to use Android system is because of google ecosystem and what you can do on it, and Samsung apps actually is a deterrent for me.

There's a relatively simple solution Don.

You don't have to play :)

Oh, some people will get hurt feelings, but believe it or not (for now) it's not a crime, and no one can make you :)

Just saw a headline about Facebook adding themselves to the list of companies no longer working with Huawei, meaning fb, instagram and whatsapp apps can't be preinstalled, and here I am thinking a device that comes with less preinstalled garbage is appealing to me, let me decide!

Had an email from my bank yesterday. They're trying to force customers to download and use an app for payment verification for online shopping.

Not gonna happen!
