Victorinox Soldier 1986 hollow rivet

Hi guys! I have a 1986 soldier and i was wondering if the hollow rivet is weaker than the full rivet.. do you know if it is reliable as the standard rivet? Or i can expect it to break sooner or later? thanks!

Hi Trix...

The hollow rivets are as per strict standards of the Swiss Army and are designed for attaching bails and lanyards... I haven’t come across any that are compromised... Overall pin diameter is thicker than solid pins (approx. 4mm vs 3mm) to compensate for it being hollow...

i'm sorry for posting this topic in the wrong place and thank you for moving it.. So the hollow rivet is 1mm thicker, although it will be a shelf queen (or king) i feel more comfortable knowing it. Thank you for the info guys, really appreciated :D Another quick question please: do you think it's worth paying a 1986 NIB Soldier 100 usd when i can buy a NIB Pioneer for 30 and remove the keyring?

The 1986 Soldier is worth what you want to pay. :)

Since you mention the alternative of buying a Pioneer and removing the keyring, that makes me think you want to use it. (Correct me if I am wrong!)
If it's going to be a "user", you can find a lightly used 1986 Soldier for far less than $100!  :tu:
But either a Pioneer or a lightly used Soldier will work great as a user.  :salute:

That would be the limit on what I would pay for a genuine soldier even if its in excellent condition... but that’s just me... Not that well versed on market prices...

Well the knife is new in box and I think I'm not going to use it extensively since here in my country any kind of blade it's forbidden. I will use it just around the house but i will only admire it for most of the time :D I asked you guys cause I felt a little bit dumb at first paying so much (for me) for a knife but after thinking about it I feel Soldier to be different from a Pioneer even if they has the same tools and i wanted to know if you guys feel the same about it

To me, holding a Soldier knife has a different feeling than the regular Pioneer... It’s part of the history how Victorinox became to be as at present...

This is now why Alox soldiers in particular becomes a collection focus for me... :cheers:

I was wondering why older Soldier has the upper rivet in nickel-silver (i think) while the central rivet is made of another metal?

If I recall, on my soldier with no hollow rivet, BOTH of the end rivets are nickel-silver and the centre one is brass.
Maybe it's because the centre one doesn't need to be as strong? (It's only function is to hold the spring in place)

I remember reading somewhere that the purpose of the hollow rivet wasn't for attaching a lanyard, but that it was meant to be used in adjusting the sight on rifles. How, I have no idea.
Anyone got more infos on that?

If you hang the hollow rivet SAK with bail on some string, you can use it as a plumb bob.
(How that helps calibrate a sight, I don't know. :D )

AFAIK, the purpose of the hollow rivet was to enable using the knife as plumb-bob when using the FASS 57 rifle as a grenade launcher. This is explained at the following link:

Anyway I just want to show you my 1986 Soldier.. I'm so happy to have it because i bought from a collector and he sent me the knife perfectly new with the box also new!

@microbe, I don't think there is one particular bail that you can just buy and add to your Pioneer/Solider.  But several forum members have had success adding their own.  Here's a link to a bail I made for a Pioneer of mine.  Perhaps you could do something like this.

Oh, that looks like it would work for me.
Once the neighbor is home with his bicycle and it's a bit darker I will get myself a piece of spoke. Let's see if the Spirit wirecutter can handle a spoke.

Don't worry about the strength of the hollow rivet unless you want to drive over it with a Main Battle Tank.
