Victorinox Outdoor Master Mic Knife

Just got the SMKW catalog in and found this fixed blade in there. I know it was mentioned months ago but looks like they are here!

Really liking both, but smaller one for me (I like a fixed blade I can pocket carry).   $120-$200 is a bit steep for 1.4116 and Kydex sheaths, however. Too bad Vic hasn't decided to experiment with something like S30V.

Vic does actually make these, correct? I know for years, they simply distributed Muela of Spain.

I like the looks of both and would like to have one of each, but I think think the price point is going to limit sales.

The little one looks like a Muela Peccary.
The big one looks like a version of the Muela Kodiak.

Pretty sure Muela makes them.  Country of origin = Spain.

They look nice, but I'm afraid they won't sell many at those prices, which put them in direct competition with knives like the Fallkniven F1/S1/A1 and TOPS BOB in 154CM, and significantly more expensive than knives like the Mora Garberg.

The pictures now available on the internet doesn't show the tang stamp 'Swiss Made'.

Let's be honest: The Victorinox news department sucks. They have a news letter, but it rarely informs us about the new knife products.

Just got one of these, accepting the fact that the steel is softer so that isn't a concern.  I was very disappointed in the attention to detail you would normally expect from Victorinox.  This probably stems from the fact it is made in Spain and not Switzerland at their own plant, and their own eyes on the finished product doing quality control and is evident in the finished product.  The rivets are not smooth with the scales at all, the blade edge toward the handle is uneven from the left side to the right and even the scales were shaped uneven at the blade end from a slightly diagonal grind.   Not what you expect from Victorinox.   It wouldn't have bothered me so much, but at the price point, especially considering the steel used, there's no excuse.  The sheath system is great though, which is a gripe I have with many other knives where they did the knife right but the sheath was horrible.  The feel of this knife in the hand is excellent.   I'll fix the grind flaw myself, I just expect more at this price point.

Well... I've carried this around a couple days, and I find the grip to very comfortable (although, the blue is already fading so I think they used brand new blue jean material for the micarta )  Anyway... I decided based on how close to the scales the blade is, I would fix the uneven grind from one side to the other and make a small sharpening choil.  I'm also going to modify this for mounting a TKC/ESEE pouch and remove the firesteel holder.   I'll post the whole thing once I get it done.  It's growing on me.  One bad thing about this grade of steel though, is every little scratch is pretty much a permanent little addition to its character, which is fine.  This one's going to be put to use quite a bit I hope.

Not many serious reviews are to be found on the internet. All reviews are dated from september - november 2019. Strange. Has anyone an idea if this knife is a sales succes?

Most reviews fall short.   I've grown fond of it for what it is in the short time I've had it now and decided to customize it a little.  The steel is soft and that is a plus if you want a knife that sharpens to a razor's edge easy in the field. It is thick enough to handle most camping tasks without issue.  The sheath is better than I've received with higher dollar knives so that's a plus.  I only customized mine to carry more on the sheath itself, not because of any failing in design or production.  Would I buy another one?  Only if the price point matched the product.  That's my best answer.  I like it, but I think it's overpriced and they need to pay more attention to detail when it comes to quality control.

Finished project.   My thoughts as posted before - it is a good knife, but the price point needs to come down.  That said, I decided I was going to make this work.  I added a sharpening choil to the knife and filed down around the offset grind from the factory.  If it came this way, I wouldn't have an issue with it as I prefer a knife without a finger choil to at least have a sharpening choil.  Added a TKC/ESEE pouch and in order to do so I felt it needed a small piece of kydex added to keep it from bouncing around on just the top two screws.  This gave me room to carry an Altoid tin, Arkansas stone, and a Soldier along as well.

Not paying that price level when it's not even a "real" Victorinox knife. >:(
Besides, I craft my own puukko with Lauri PT blades - much better steel.

Today my brand new "Outdoor Master MIC L, 4.2261" came in.
I'm not one of those guys who live in the woods or spend my days in survival courses. I'm not an outdoor type of man!
The last time I carried a real knife was in 2007 while on a mission in Liberia. It was my Mission MPS-Ti pilot survival knife. But I carried the MPS only to 'show off' (which it served its purpose very well). The knives I buy nowadays are for collecting only.

However, I can't offer you a user's review on the Vic. However I took a close look into this model.

Finnish is indeed not fully up to Vic standards, but overall it was very good, just not perfect. Nonetheless, there are equal good knives to be found that won't cost € 198!
The knife was smaller then I's expected. Its was also heavier then expected.
The handles are made of beautiful dark blue micarta.

The fire steel was larger then expected. It has a nice lanyard. It would have been nice if the knife itself also was provided with a nice lanyard, but it wasn't. The lanyard of the fire steel doesn't fit the knife (too short).

The sheet is just fine. There's a knob to adjust the tension om the knife when it is seated.
However I discovered one big flaw: The two screws/nuts that hold together the two pieces of the sheet plus the fire starter are in fact too short! They just merely fit into the bolt, which gives not much 'grip' when force is applied.

In the 3rd picture the Vic is compared with a Fjallkniven S1, an ESEE Izula and a pristine Chris Reeve Sebenza in BG-42 steel (stop drooling!).
The 4th picture shows a MPS-Ti, a Morakniv and a BG Paracord knife.

And 2 pics of the sheet. Take a look at the yellow circles...

Overall: It's a fine and sturdy medium size knife, but a little bit too expensive.

A shame these are not up to Vic‘s standards. Guess I will stick with my Moras for my fixed blade needs.  :dunno:

I think the last thing I will be doing to mine is filing some sort of pattern into the grip.  It's a bit slippery for micarta.   Other than that, it's kinda been growing on me as much as my old Buck fixed blades and that's the thing to keep in mind...  they can't handle the work of anything you wouldn't put say... a Buck 119 or 124 through.  Their failure here really is the price point and they need to tell the factory in Spain to either pay attention to detail or lose their contract.
