Never Owned and Leatherman

As the title states, I have never owned and Leatherman. I have some Swisstools and a Spirit (love em all!) but a friend of mine has been extolling the virtues of his Leatherman for awhile now. After finishing Season 5 of "Alone" and seeing the dominance of the Leatherman as a chosen small knife, I gotta admit curiosity is killing me and I want to jump in the deep end.

I have been looking on the Leatherman site and I am astounded by all the varieties available. I wanted to get some guidance on choosing my first one and figured you fine fellas could help a guy. I am looking for one that has the one hand opening blade, premium steel (154cm, S30V etc) and for me I like to have the option of a woodsaw and scissors. I am actively looking online right now to get an idea of what I need. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you absolutely need the premium knife steel, I think your only option is a Charge Ti :tu:

The Charge + (154cm) or Charge Tti+ (s30v) both have upgraded knife steel in the plain edge blade :salute:

But the Wave is a great option as well (same toolset basically but regular stainless steel knife blade 420)  :tu:

The SURGE is a bit bigger than the Wave/Charge that you might also be interested in as it has some of the best scissors on a MT :tu:

You could get a wave and change the plain edge blade with a Charge blade, which probably will be cheaper :dunno:

As above, if you really 'need' a premium steel, then the charge is the one for you. So charge+ or tti+, as already said above.

I wouldn't dismiss the 420hc blade though. Most find it more than good enough, and as you probably already know it's 'easier' to sharpen.

There's just so many choices with leatherman as you have found out.

My first was between a surge and a wave. I spent forever deciding which one to go for, so I ended up with both.  :facepalm:  :ahhh

Then a few weeks later ended up with a signal.....then a charge.....then it all got out of control from that point...!!!

Leatherman know exactly what they are doing from a marketing point of view and a very good job they have done of it too.

Sounds like you need a charge.....and a wave as back up haha!  :rofl:  :cheers:

I say go for the Wave, unless you use the knife a lot the 420 steel will hold up just fine and as RF pointed out you could always replace the blade with upgraded steel from loki.

I have no major problems with 420HC. I have a lot of confidence in my Buck knives. Besides, I have frequently said that the steel in a SAK is plenty sufficient for any use. It was just something I figured would be nice to have on my MT.

If you're looking on the second hand market, the Charge AL and Charge ALX come with a 154CM blade.

Some people get a like-new or new Wave and buy an S30V or 154CM blade from Loki and drop it in their Wave.
This gets you a more affordable platform while still having a premium knife steel.

I may just go with the 420hc blade. One advantage would be easier sharpening in the field. I saw several blades on ebay I can pick up if I decide to go premium.

I started out with the OG Wave and LOVED the concept but it had many issus that I won't get into now.  So many infact I almost gave up on the concept of the pliars based MT.  Fortunately I found the Mighty Swisstool and it's Glamorious and spirited little sister The Spirit.  The better part of 20 years later I found MTO and the great folks here convinced me to give Leatherman another try.  That try came in the form of the Mighty Surge gifted to me by another forum member while deeply involved in exposing my Love afair with the Swisstool In it's FIRST 30 Day Challenge resulting in a new badge being created.  For my thoughts concerning the Surge here's my wrap up on that Surge Challenge.

I have sense Given Leatherman a serious try and they have really stepped up their game sense that first Wave.  Although very differant the Surge is Leatherman's answer to the Swisstool, and the Spirit I would say is Vic's answer to what the Wave, Charge etc...have become.  Give either one a try, I think you will find them capable and of high quality if not as refind.

2 surges (1 BO)
ST300
Sidekick
3 Revs
2 ps4 squirt
1 es4 squirt

Rev is my hand extension. Surge is when big boy tasks are required. With my limited usage on the ST300,  also a fine choice.

Surge gives me the heaviest duty and most options...esp with the bits and bit extender. I used 1/4" sockets if I wanted.

Blade swap is a good option :like: also I didn't get into the Al, Alx, OG Tti, Ti, Xti and Slv as they are retired now but there are still plenty of those floating around but the Xti and Alx lack scissors (they have double bit drivers) :salute: none of these have replaceable cutters as the + models but not really a deal breaker probably  :cheers:

I had a hard time between the Surge ( old version ) and Wave.  I chose the Wave and loved every moment with it.  I then got the OG Surge and really fell in love.  I've since moved on from the Wave to a Charge TTi ( S30V main blade ) and New Surge.  These are IMO the top LMs out.  The Charge +'s are out so theres that option as well.  There's a few more OHO blades on LM multitools like the OHT and Signal.

Argh...you guys are killing me. The Charge +, although pretty pricey, is looking really good, but I may just go with a Wave to give it a go and see how I feel. If this is like any of my other collection hobbies, I will end up with a pile pretty soon.
