Photobucket is the worst...
on: December 19, 2019, 02:48:45 AM
Looks like they deep sixed my account. Not sure what was the issue...as I did have a paid subscription. Guess I will not be using them ever again. Not sure if this means I won't be posting images in here any more...guess I will have to reflect on a different service if I wish to post any. Sorry for all the lost images on this forum. Got to love Photobucket.  :dunno:

I was certain I had security with them. I did have a paid subscription. Guess I was wrong. Happily enough, I still have all of my originals. Unfortunately, I have looked around on this forum and it appears they removed all of my photos.  :poh:

With that said, any suggestions on a more secure photo imaging host that will allow me to post images to this forum?

If you had a paid subscription on what grounds did they remove your pics ?

No clue. They wanted to change my subscription. I was told that soon...I was going to reach my cap...although from what I originally paid for had no photo cap. I guess they arbitrarily changed what I was paying for. I guess they just pulled the rug from under me and erased my account. I am going to monitor my credit card to ensure I am no longer paying Photobucket for their now non-existent services. Frankly after this...I no longer trust them. I did weather many changes back in 2017 because I had a paid account. I take that was no longer enough for Photobucket. They can smurf themselves repeatedly.

I am very disapointed in this. I was with Photobucket paying for their service these past 10 years.

I have always hated photo hosting services, paid or free. The free ones are the worst with 94% of the screen real estate occupied by stupid banners and ads. But it seriously sucks that they removed your photos even thought you had a paid subscription :(

Personally, I prefer having a paid subscription with a regular hosting provider (I use https://www.antagonist.nl/, a Dutch one). Virtually unlimited storage and traffic, depending on the plan. No ads, no nothing. Just upload your photos and post the links here. I've actually installed Wordpress which makes it a bit easier to upload images.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Contact your credit card company and file a dispute over services that they cancelled on you. And if you had a contract that you already paid for, you might get some of that back if Photbucket defaulted on said agreement.

I have been using IMGUR since Photobucket decided to act like butts with everyone who had pictures on their site. SO many forum pics from years back were suddenly rendered "bigfoot blurry" and lost. Ugh.

I agree. Never been a fan of photo hosting sites either. With this method you also don’t give them free content and you keep your own images under control.

Don't mean to be overly dramatic, but the knowledge and information that's gone to waste thanks to Photobucket is like burning down the library of Alexandria a second time

I can't imagine your pics aren't still there. It would be complete business suicide for them to just randomly delete paying accounts.

According to their Facebook page the site is down and they are working on it   :dunno:

They even have a cute pic

Hi Chaks

If this is true - This is a massive loss to our forum
You must be our best photo poster - And your photos are just fantastic and great references

When FB first changed their policy, I lost a few links here in MTo - And I remember being very grateful at the time that you had upgraded your account

I looked at a couple of your threads just now and some of the photos are there others are not
Also when they trash an account they usually show the blurry image or a FB message - So what has happened seems a bit strange
Also seems odd they'd trash a fee paying customer's account :o
Maybe Steve's theory about a site error is correct   ???

I do feel a little for these hosting services - Nothing is free in this world - And hosting costs money too - We know this for ourselves at MT.o
So these services have to be paid for somehow.

With FB it was the way they handled it that was appalling - And also the charges were astronomical - At least initially

Anyway I hope something gets sorted.

See that Flickr is now begging for paid subscriptions claiming they are losing tens of thousands of dollars, and even subscribing won't offset their expenses.

Yes indeed. I just logged back on...and although my photos are there...I now have plenty of advertisements plastered all over the place.

I did find this link explaining what happened...

We apologize for the recent service disruption that you have been experiencing these last few days.

We deeply regret that this happened and we are working around the clock to bring photobucket.com back online.

First and foremost, your images are safe. Our number one priority is to ensure that your images are secure and we have several systems in place to make sure nothing is compromised.

We will provide ongoing updates as we make progress to finding the full solution.

What happened?
On Wednesday, December 18th we experienced a total power outage at our primary data center. Due to the abrupt nature of the outage the equipment that runs the site shutdown unexpectedly. The immediate shutdown resulted in systematic issues when the power was restored. Unfortunately, due to this unexpected shutdown, we were also not able to rely on our backup data center resources.

What are we doing right now?
The process is taking longer than expected because the security we have in place requires additional processing time. Most importantly, our primary focus is to ensure your photos are safe and secure!

What are we doing to prevent these situations going forward?
We are in the process of migrating Photobucket to a more reliable environment. The environment will give us more stability and help us reduce these issues in the future. Once service is restored, our primary focus will be on moving your beloved images to this environment.

We understand your frustration and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Ted
CEO

Good news.

It does mean they're using a low tier datacenter though...

Which surprises me, but only a little.

Years ago I stopped using Photobucket and reading this thread made me realize why.  Although considering you were/are a paid subscriber, unless you somehow violated their likely vague terms of service, I can't imagine Photobucket removing tool images.  After reading what was said by the CEO, I am not surprised they are using likely a inexpensive data center, but I am glad to see the issue has been "fixed" for now.

Information, either be genuine unforeseen incidents or otherwise is seemingly being erased from the internet in general.  This is why archiving as much information as possible is critical for future generations.   Sites such as Archieve.is are pivotal, as in the case of Chako's images, some of that information either cannot be easily found or once it's gone, good luck finding it ever again. There is something to be said about non digital physical copies of information as well..

As for an alternative to Photobucket,  while I am not sure about that, I'd recommend a paid service.  Chances are, whoever is running that site will be more interested to keep the site running if there is a lucrative gain to this.

EDIT:  In case Chako's Gerber episodes images ever vanish again or if there is any glitch here, I've archived all five pages.  So long as this archiving site exists, these images will stay there indefinitely.

Gerber Episodes page one.

Gerber Episodes page two.

Gerber Episodes page three.

Gerber Episodes page four.

Gerber Episodes page five.

The links on your archived site are still hotlinks to photobucket so I'm not sure they wouldn't suffer the same fate as the links here.

Perhaps so if one were to click on the image.  However, the archived page itself will retain the images since these images are being archived.   This is merely one solution and perhaps others may have other solutions.

Chances are the top brass at Fiskars doesn't care that this information is being posted and I doubt the top brass at Photobucket are troubled over this either.  This all comes down to money, yet as Chako has said, he is a paying customer, so this doesn't benefit them to delete his photo's.

Your first link is missing many images.   :dunno:

Money didn't have anything to do with Chako's pics disappearing nor whether anyone were troubled over them. They disappeared due to a technical issue on photobuckets servers.

Just noticed that now.  That is unusual, as some of the images were saved and others weren't.  This is a first I've noticed this occurrence.

EDIT:  I've noticed if you refresh the image, this may resolve the image issue not showing up.

Unless the archive site hosts the pics by attachment like we do here they are still dependent on photobucket .

If they were screen shots then that would work as an archive.
