The Amazing and Versatile, Yet Simple Toothpick

Have you ever gone to tighten a screw only to find out the hole in the wood is stripped out?


Solution: Toothpicks! Insert a toothpick into the hole.


Once it reaches the end of the hole, break the toothpick off and reinsert as many as needed to fill the void.


No need to over-stuff the area. Just enough to fit tightly next to each other.

Wrong...


Right...


Now, turn in the screw. Ta-da!


Wooden stick matches will work for this too, as will wooden chopsticks. I've even shaved thick sliver off a 2x4 or other misc piece of wood laying around.

But I'm suggesting the unpretentious toothpick...because I get a merit badge.  :woohoo:

An old handyman's trick that I've used more than a few times.  Don't usually need more than one toothpick per hole, just enough so the screw bites again.

I've also found golf tees ideal for plugging vacuum lines when working on cars.
