Really sorry to hear that mate...

Over here has been escalating fast in 1 and a half / 2 weeks, that it seams like two months has gone by....

25431 suspected
4268 confirmed positive
76 dead by yesterday's count

The elderly resting homes are getting infected by the dozens, for example yesterday on one home with 100 of capacity (elders and staff), 88 tested positive...  :-\

A lot of people still pay very little attention to this, and think it only happens to other folks... We already have close to 100 arrests from disobedience to the authorities.

Great. Now that's some real community spirit right there...  :hatsoff:  We need some more of that spirit everywhere these days...

Stay safe everybody...  :salute:

It can be very useful, but it can awlso give you a false idea of being smarter than everyone else and thinking laws and rules don't apply to you.

Just made a batch of homemade hand sanitizer with 91% rubbing alcohol and Banana boat brand aloe gel, came out pretty good although if you stick to the recipes on youtube its a little watery so I just added more gel I think it will be good since this is a higher % alcohol .

Just a bit of a public service announcement -

In the US, the CDC advises everyone to wear a cloth mask.  If EVERYONE does so, the transmission can be decreased.  Think of it like herd immunity.  A certain (large) number of people, and especially the asymptomatic carriers, need to limit shedding the virus for this to work.

Several layers of cloth with a coffee filter in between (yes... coffee filter) would be effective in reducing the spread.  Leave the commercially produced masks for the healthcare workers.

Lots of interesting face cover ideas floating around.  I watched something but you tube is not loading right now for me.  Most of us should have a bandana  :pok:.  Steve C posted something as well.

For those in the US:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/smithfield-shutting-u-pork-plant-162006736.html

I don’t think it will be limited to meat as eventually the folks who harvest or process our food and necessities will get sick.

But I do think it won’t be apocalyptic like we see in the movies. Workers will recover and go back to work in these plants and farms. It’s just that there will be a period of short handedness and consequently tight supplies. Just my opinion.

It'll be different in unexpected ways for sure.  A lot of teachers in the area died, so getting the schools up and running again will be...

Issues are everywhere. But the lack of money some people experience is way worse than the possible shortage on some products in the future. The economy is f up everywhere

I've seen a few of this sort of thing for sale lately.  but this one, in particular, looks well designed - or maybe jimping gives me that impression.

Thanks for sharing. At least for me I don’t think it would work as it would just contaminate whatever I have in my pocket. I’m better off using gloves.

So after being let go due to the pandemic economy I was able to find a job (forever grateful to God for this).
But also means I have to report to work daily. So after talking to the wife we have an arrangement in terms of work clothes washing, undressing in the garage etc.

For my EDC, I basically weaned out anything that was hard to clean or just extra. A bit hard to do as I always carried my son’s baby sock, my Mom’s medallion, etc.

Essentially left with sanitizer, masks, keys and plastic cards (ID, etc). Sadly have to leave behind my Leatherman Mini tool, Gerber Shard,  and American Lawman and will instead carry my trusty Alox Cadet.

The cadet is so useful and easy to wash.

Stay safe and for those encountering hardships - hang in there. Life will get better and rely on your faith, friends, and family

I'd give it another thought, maybe carry it on a carabiner off a belt loop.

I see people wearing gloves, touching things at the grocery store, and then touching their face, phone, pockets... everything.  I've even seen people eating with gloves on.  Anyone who wears disposable gloves on the job knows - the moment you touch something that's potentially contaminated with what you are trying to protect yourself from - the gloves get changed out right away.  If you wear gloves and touch anything that could be contaminated, and then touch anything that is not contaminated, you're doing yourself and others a disservice.

I'd say nobody is better off with gloves.  Indeed, gloves are only scientifically recommended if you are cleaning your place, or caring for someone else who is ill.

The virus doesn't go through your skin. You're better off not wearing gloves and using hand sanitizer after every touch of something other than your own self.  (thats what I do).

If you are in an environment where you open doors a lot or use elevators - probably an urban area - it looks to be quite helpful.

That is kind my thinking too. That said I don't think the material of that product is a coincidence - from the color it looks like a brass or bronze variation. Thus the majority of the alloy will be copper which has antimicrobial properties.

Even if it has lots of copper bacteria and virus will be remain active for some time before they die off. Less time than on other surfaces, but time enough to transfer to a pocket. Maybe keep it free hanging or some other carry solution? A carabiner like ElevenBlade suggests maybe?

:iagree: hand washing / hand sanitiser unless you're changing gloves after every task like in a healthcare environment.

I've never worked in food prep or clinical environments, but I did spend 25 years in some of the dirtiest machine shops in the land. I now treat the world like I'm back at work.

I use the nitrile coated (fingers and palm) knit work gloves. Clean side, dirty side. Nitrile coated parts touch all potentially contaminated surfaces, and uncoated back will scratch an itch, or nudge my slipping glasses back up my nose. As soon as the gloves come off, I use sanitiser on hands and walking stick handle.

It's not that those gloves are the best for the task, but that I am conditioned not to let the "dirty" fingers and palm touch me when wearing them.

Wow!  That's a great technique.  They should market gloves with some sort of clean/dirty differentiation in color if not material... touching side and scratching side.

I had actually thought to wear a glove on one hand - and have a clean hand and a dirty hand...  (dirty hand with the glove to remind myself).  I thought of it yesterday and completely forgot about it today.    (clean hand!).

I really like your idea because it doesn't involve changing gloves between potential contaminations.

Yup. I can leave the house, lock the door, put the gloves on, and might not need to remove them again till I get back home.

Do you think  this sort of glove would do the job?

Not recommended unless the contaminated air doesn't touch the grey bit. :P

Eleven, that's exactly the kind of thing I use.  :tu:

Pablo, if it's settling on the gloves in that way, it's being inhaled and settling on my face, tache, and beard too.  ;) I don't consider that uncoated section an increase of risk.

As I mentioned before, it's not so much the gloves themselves, as the association and triggering of a deeply entrenched behaviour pattern for me. Sometimes, I even find myself doing it with winter gloves on. If it keeps my fingers and palms away from my face, it's an effective separation from a lot of automatic unhelpful habits. As with any system, human factors tend to be the weak spot.

I’m seriously considering bringing a spray bottle of bleach with me and spraying it on handles etc.

But would probably get weird looks or worse get arrested.

I’ve taken to keeping it in the car and spraying on paper towels to use on surfaces like ATMs, shopping carts etc. as an extra precaution I wear gloves and dispose of them when done, then hand sanitizing. Good process for errands.

I’m starting work next week So a bit trickier. Essentially I’m there the whole day and have to eat lunch, walk around etc.   I’ll have to rely on frequent hand washing.

I have become very glad that I keep a stock of toilet paper, bleach, etc because known of it has been in stock when I’ve gone out to stores.  Even before this, I carried a couple antibacterial hand wipes with me all the time and a bandana/buff.  Now in addition to those I have created some diy sanitizing wipes using coin towels, bleach and dish soap that I keep in a small waterproof container and use when I go out to wipe various things down.

Nice job!!

Yeah when I first heard that hand sanitizers were running out I went straight to the rubbing alcohol and grab extras. Attached spray nozzles for the family so that it can be used sparingly.
