Fat Wood help
on:
July 23, 2020, 03:33:28 PM
So I played around with fatwood for the first time recently and didn't get it to light as I expected it to. I feathered it out towards the tip (it's a fairly small piece I split off) and it lite fairly well with a match, but once the feathered wood burned off the piece just went out. I could see resin bubbling away at the top of the piece so I assume there is actually a significant amount of it in there, thoughts?

Try to scrape of some material first, then shavings and lastly some thin sticks
Your piece might be to thick to be heated enough to burn.

I love fat wood. In my usage I like to make sure to scrape, feather, or otherwise to get as fine of material so that it can have a chance to catch fire. This is key especially when using a ferro rod. When fat wood is really resinous it'll light easily but processing the initial material fine is still key IMO. Scraping is works like a charm. Have fun.
