84mm alox back tools
on: January 28, 2022, 10:02:52 AM
I would like to get an awl on the back side of a cadet mod I’m tinkering with. I have tried the spring from a celador model but they currently have 4 pins as opposed to the three on the alox so it doesn’t work straight out if the box.

I seem to remember that maybe older 84mm celador models had 3 pins can anyone confirm?

I would be reasonably happy to just add a pin hole if they were standard silver alox but they are limited edition scales so would like to keep them intact.

Anyone managed it in another ingenious way without drilling another pin hole in the alox scales?

I have answered one do the questions myself as I have found a recruit in my collection that is 3 pins…of course that doesn’t have back tools so how to get them on the Alox frame still a conundrum.

Perhaps use the liners from a celador inside the alox scales and make a pin that’s just wide enough to sit in the holes without going through would work?

Any other ideas gratefully received ;0)

The celador liners method works btw!

Looks like you got it all figgered out!   :tu: I do similarly for test fitting 84mm 4th pin/back tool installation.

FWIW, if you have a 3-layer, as long as the two liners fully enclose or capture the pin, it can work too… without drilling the alox scales to receive the pin end.

Oops. Please ignore white dot.  ;)

Yes that makes sense. The saw liner’s 4th holes was closed so that could have worked without the extra outer liners but as alox knives are so thin the extra they add may be a bit of bonus width. ;0)

Cue the ‘that’s what she said’ meme!

Nice work and good ingenuity! And I must add that it looks quite good with the silver liners next to the blue

Lol.

Needs to be two ‘closed’ hole liners. So you could use the saw liner and one outer one at the minimum. Or you could find an older knife/2-layer liner like the middle one of the 5 below. Or make one like I do, because the originals are found in knives like Voyageurs and early Cadet(II)s.

EDIT: looking at it again, it could work if the 4th pin was a pretty tight fit since it’s adjacent to the layer needing the 4th pin restraint. If the center spacer/liners were swapped I’d expect there’d be more potential to pop out.

Yeah I’m liking it. I went with this in the end and it seems a good reliable and aesthetically pleasing solution.
