It is a Weems & Plath compact parallel plotter.  There was the basic parallel rulers which could do the job and then there was the parallel plotter which was the desired tool.  It is popular among mariners for plotting on navigational charts, but it also has additional uses in the Navy.  It was used a lot when operating around other ships in conjunction with maneuvering boards (pictured below) for shiphandling such as manually computing stationing, avoiding and approaching other ships.  I used it so much that I bought my own set.

Thanks, cool work and fantastic skill to know. I'm always impressed when people know the analog way around things that gets more and more digital

I dont know about Victorinox but Wenger did briefly make lighters.
Here is a youtube link to product series video

I do own the Fidis wick lighter and it is a beautifully made piece. Here it is next to standard and a small size zippo.
The key feature of the Fidis is the back half of the lighter is a spare fule tank for refilling the main lighter
Thanks for the info! :like:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

When I first entered the Navy it was the primary means for a lot of the maneuvering. Even when I retired, a skilled Sailor would be more accurate using the maneuvering board for close quarter maneuvering than the radar because of radar error and algorithm limitations.

Don't know if you can help, but I've been looking for a tutorial on bosun whistles lanyards and still haven't found one. Any idea where I can find one? Thanks!

For awl the landlubbers, here's an image of what I'm talking about:

Yesterday was a work day (a long one as well  ::) )

I'm not allowed to take pictures in the restricted areas I work in so, here's a pic (taken at home a while ago) of the work tools  ;)

Are those picks I see? They look like... the name escapes me, jiggler keys maybe?

Todays contribution, my Moga controller, for when you're on the go and need to kill some times playing manly games and definitely not building an elaborate underground farm in Minecraft...

I have a few sparrow lock pick sets and one of them includes a set of jigglers, I've never been able to get them to work for me though  :dunno:

Then again I'm still more a rake guy than a pick guy

DAY FOURTEEN

Unlike smiller, I only have 1 slide rule... I'll show it here anyway. :D
It was made in england, probably in the 50's?
Show content

Original box with a 70(?) year old sticker. Coincidentally, when you work it out, I paid about the equivalent of 13 shillings for this. :o

Original instructions, which I digitised. They're surprisingly easy to understand...

The centrepiece, of course. As slide rules go, this one is a very basic 12" one.  The rails and slide are made of wood. The rails are joined by a 12x1.25" sheet of brass that can be slightly bent to set the tension.
The scales and various markings are on paper that was laminated to the wood using celluloid.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I’ve never seen a tutorial.  I think Bos’n knotwork is one of those close held secrets that just gets passed down to each other.
