God doesn't want me to own a Rangergrip Autumn Spirit
on: October 17, 2020, 12:45:09 PM
I ordered one of these as soon as they came out last year, and returned it because the blade was rubbing the liner.
Now that they're nearly gone from the shops I decided "now or never" and ordered another one.
It has the same problem!
Sigh.
I love all things orange so I am the target audience for this one. But crikey, this totally misaligned blade annoys me disproportionately.
I think it will annoy me every time I look at the knife. I hate returning things, though.
Anyone else had this problem with Rangergrips? Especially the orange ones? Or is this just part of the New Normal!

I dont have a Rangergrip to be able to share my experience...  But I have been keeping an eye on this orange Rangergrip, for obvious reasons.

I'm along the line of thinking that this is a new normal.  My last two Leatherman blades had a similar issue.  In the old days when things were simple and slipjoints we're all the craze, we could expect perfect symmetry.  I have a feeling that mass production and liner locks are to blame.

Interesting question- I just checked my 3 130s: the 71 no issues at all; wooden scaled ranger 55, not perfectly centred, but no rubbing; the autumn spirit - wow it’s close, but doesn’t actually rub. I must admit that as none of them rub, I hadn’t looked before....

You’re looking at it the wrong way. Maybe God wants you to have one like that.  ;)  or that’s the same knife you originally returned.

Just kidding I’d be like

I only checked one (the one I carry from time to time), since the rest of them are stored away.

And the blade is not perfectly centered, but it has enough room between it and the liner to not rub.

But looking at the shape of the blade, I ask myself the question if it was ever supposed to be dead smack in the middle, since the blade only get thinner on one side (don't know if this makes sense).

Anyway, it shouldn't rub, that's for sure.

A blade crink. A testament to Swiss precision

I don't know... on my Wenger Snow Beast the blade is reasonably centred and doesn't rub the liner at all. Here , the edge of the blade makes a slight grating sound when opening. There's plenty of space for the blade to be centred as it's not sharing that layer with a smaller blade... there is absolutely no reason to have the blade leaning so far to one side that it touches the liner.
Definitely a step backwards for Victorinox, and not an improvement in any way.
I'll probably keep this one, though. I always feel sorry for the dealers sending stuff back. Love the orange scales, hate the sound the blade makes when opening! Oh well!

So it doesn’t contact when closing or snapping shut? If it doesn’t, I’d think that would be normal.

I’m also a fan of Orange knives and have some concerns about getting one as it would be the first of this size. So I have no idea what a ‘normal’ crink or alignment is for these.

But if I had any doubt with a brand new knife, I’d return or exchange it. Perhaps a call or email to Victorinox to see if it’s ‘new normal’ first, since the answer isn’t clear in this thread.

Yes it snaps shut missing the liner by 0.00001mm or so!
When opening you're applying some pressure from the thumb-notch side - which makes it impossible to open without scraping the blade against the liner. If they'd done it the other way round with all the empty space on the far side from the notch then that would never happen. This is not Victorinox's finest moment!

The blade of my orange Ranger Autumn Spirit isn't exactly positioned in the centre, but it doesn't touch the liner. There enough space.
HOWEVER after reading your post and taking a closer look at this knife, I noticed that the SAW touches the liner. No, worse, it rests on the liner, and made a tiny little dent in it!
So the blade is okay, but the saw is misalligned.
However, I can live with it.

Ugh. I see the return dilemma more clearly now, I think.

Not quite bad enough to feel justified for a clear case to return. But you know it’s going to bother you every time you carry or use it.

Maybe return it...third time’s a charm?  :dunno:

Funny that I completely have different ideas about similar issues with used and vintage knives in general. If something is misaligned, I rarely hesitate to bend or hammer the smurf outta stuff until it fits like I want!

Or, get the third one, and return or sell the second if the third is aligned.   :dunno:

I feel bad about returns too.  Often, the retailers can't/don't resell the item and take a loss.
